My mother's family, the Geehan/Guihan's lived in Dooks, Glenbeigh, County Kerry. Her parents were William and Mary Geehan (nee Leahy). There were 4 children, Jeremiah born in 1908, Mary/May born in 1910, Michael (Mick) and my mother Julia born in 1918. May and Julia moved to Australia with their families in the 1950's from England. The last known family members living in Dooks were their mother Mary Guihan who died in 1959 and her son Michael (Mick) who died in 1980. Mick was aged 66 and single at the time of his death. The Kerry County Council records show that Jeremiah, Mary and Michael are all buried in Droumavalla, Killorglin Burial Grounds. I am unable to find any record of where my grandfather William is buried. When I visited the Killorglin Burial Grounds I could find no mention of any of their graves, or those of any of the Geehan/Guihan families although I know that they lived in this Parish for many decades (maybe centuries).
It would seem they were too poor to have headstones, but is it possible to find out where their bodies may have been buried?
On my last visit I was able to locate what is left of the cottage I believe that Mary and Mick lived in until Mick's death in 1980 and it was a very moving and important experience for me.
I found it very sad to visit my mother's home and find no mention of where her parents and other family members are buried. It is as if they never existed. It is sad that the family lost touch with each other over the years and I do not believe there are any family members still alive in Kerry. However, if possible I would like to pass on to younger family members some knowledge about their personal Irish family history. Julia and May had 4 children (2 still living) and 3 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren (so far) who are all living in Australia.
I do hope to visit again one day and to learn more about the lives of my Geehan/Guihan family. I would appreciate any information that is available to help me.
