Thomas Gilmore, born 1800-1803, married Mary Read, 1828, diocese of Killala and Achonry. Thomas had a sister named Eliza who married James Kidney. Parents of Thomas and Eliza remain unidentified, as does the father of Mary/Maria Read/Reed/Reid.

  • Janis:

You don't mention the religious denomination of the couple. I did check Roots Ireland and could not locate the 1828 marriage record.www.askabout.

Did the couple emigrate? In the 1858 griffiths valuation for Co. Sligo there was one Thomas Gilmore entry in Ballynakill civil parish.

  • Hi, Roger,

I DID miss this posting. Thomas Gilmore and Mary Read were protestants. They immigrated to Canada between the birth of daughter Maria (1839) and son Thomas (1842), as the former was born in Ireland and the latter in Ontario, Canada. So while Gilmores appearing in the 1858 Griffiths evaluation may be part of their family, they are not our guy. An handwritten index to marriages in the parish of Achonry and Killala exists and may be seen on Marriage Bonds Film 100868, National Archives, Dublin. The index, alas, is quite limited, naming only the groom, the bride, and the year of the marriage in the parish. The marriage bonds that the index represented would have, of course, contained much more information--they were, however, burned in the 1922 fire in Dublin. We can be sure that this is the right couple because Mary's death certificate in Canada listed her maiden surname, and their eldest identified child, James, was born in 1829.

The U.S. Civil War military pension record of one of the children (George W. Gilmore--my line) contains depositions from three of the children: Thomas, Charles, and Jane Ann. In one of them they mention "Aunt Kidney" who also seemed to be in Canada. I have recently been able to discover her identity. She was Elizabeth or Eliza Gilmore. She married James Kidney, but we don't know whether she married in Ireland or Canada. They had one son, William James Kidney, born 1850 in Canada.

There are some tithe applotment records in County Sligo that seem promising:

    • “Thos Gilmor,” 1833, townland of Barnacoghill, Templeboy Parish.
    • “James Gilmor,” 1833, diocese of Killala, townland of Tullylynn, Castleconnor parish. Listed next to “Robt Reid,” of the same place.
    • “James Gilmor,” 1833, diocese of Killala, townland of Tully, Castleconnor parish. Listed next to William Reed, of the same place.

Also directing further research are the other Gilmore marriages listed in the same parish:

    • Thomas Gillmore and Mary Grier, 1800
    • Hugh Gilmor and Sarah Forside, 1820
    • Stewart Gilmor and Rebecca Bradley, 1827
    • William Gilmor and Mary Coulter, 1828

Thank you so much for the note--I will continue to hope to connect with others of our Gilmore family. We hope to make a trip to Ireland this year to do some research. There are apparently some estate records that could reveal something: From John C. McTernan, Sligo Sources of Local History (Sligo: Sligo County Library, 1988), "Estate Records"

    • p. 62, Killala Estate, Rental of the May and Sligo Estates of the Lord Bishop of Killala, c. 1810 Ref. F. F./R. 31
    • p. 77 E. Mac Hale, The Parishes of the Diocese of Killala: Part IV: The Barony of Tireragh (Ballina: n.p., 1985)

Also, Church of Ireland records in Sligo for Castleconor Parish start in 1800 for b, m, & d. They are held locally and at the National Archives of Ireland, microfilm ref. no. 33. All indexed by Sligo Heritage and Genealogical Society.

So if I can just get there, or if I had a researcher on the ground, I might be able to make some progress.

    Best, Janis
