Having discovered I am the great grandson of Mary Harrington born 1858 in Ocle Pychard near Hereford (baptism at St Francis Xaviour Hereford--parents PATRICK HARRINGTON and CATHARINE HARRINGTON---formerly Lyons--St Finbarr`s Cork) who were married in London circa 1850..........I am trying to tie up the loose ends------hoping to find the roots place/townland to visit soon.Patrick was the son of JOHN HARRINGTON and CATHERINE HARRINGTON....formerly Hurley) and baptized on 19th March 1825 MUINTERVARRA....(Durrus?)
John`s father may be Timothy Harrington......
I hope someone with local knowledge may be able to help me a little more?
Any descendants around? Any knowledge of if there was Famine tragedy involved? Any knowledge of their area/ townland? Hoping to get more information prior to visit/pilgrimage.
thank you

Chris:
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
I think the family lived in Coolcoulaghta townland in Durrus civil parish. www.irishgenealogy.ie has the church records for the RC parishes in the Diocese of Cork and Ross including Muintervarra. John and Catherine were married on February 3, 1820. In addition to Mary, I can see baptismal records for Joseph 1822 Patrick 1825 Ellen 1831 another Mary 1833 (likely the 1828 Mary died) John 1835
We do have a parish liaison in the area so I will e-mail him about your message.

Thank you Roger
I`ve been on www.registers.nli.ie/parishes and enlarged/ enhanced PATRICK HARRINGTON baptism. (19th March 1825 .It confirms John (father) and Catherine Hurley(mother). It also (I`m thrilled but can`t decipher it) gives address......it looks like several odd names I need a translator ! It looks like Tarodginolieght or Jarodginoleight or even better Tuolguolluch !! It`s not far from Durrus and Patrick is registered over here as from Muinterverra.....I`m looking for actual place !! Nearly there. Can you guys help? Then i`ll be over....like so many more I guess.Coolcoulaghta -on the trial now I think .Well done. Can you get your local contact onto the case??
very best wishes
Chris

I sent the e-mail a few hours ago to the parish liaison for Durrus.
I'm sure the townland was Coolcoulaghta. I think Fr. Quinn was spelling Quol---- Notice the Q in his name and compare to the place name you see on the 1825 register. Townland names were not standarized until the 1851 census.
If you have don't hear back from our local parish liaison in a week, let me know.

Had a brief reply yesterday to an e `mail from way back I forget when. The lady who replied was working for "Living The Sheeps head Way" a tourist site officer I guess. She says she had met an old lady who said the Harringtons I`m intersted in came from BRAHALISH.........and some are still there--cattlebreeders!.I see the place is very near Coolcoughaghta. So you are right. Also-Patrick named his two of his daughters Mary and Ellen as well as Catherine..all family names. So the link is correct--I`m nearly there !!Thanks Roger......great useful site! Hello chris!. My name is Panos Karkalas. I'm Greek-Irish. My father is Greek and my mother is Irish. She is a harrington and actually she is from Brahalish just outside durrus town! Istill have relatives living there as you correctly figured out.My uncle John Harrington lives there permanently. I also remember my grandparents Mary harrington(Barry) and Michael Harrington living there. I have been doing a lot of research as of late along with the help of my mother and we managed to track it back to my great-great grandfather who was born in 1820 and was married to Mary Mahony. They had a a son John Harrington(1872-1950), my great grandfather, who was married to an Ellen McCarthy. Also without being 100% certain they had also another son and daughter. A Cornelius Harrington(circa 1867) and a Mary Harrington ( circa 1869). So John Harrington(1872-1950) and Ellen McCarthy had 2 sons and 4 daughters. Michael Harrington(1917-1992), my grandfather, Patrick Harrington(1919-1944), died as a parachuter in holland during world war 2 and is at a memorial in holland, Mary Harrignton, Eileen Harrington, Nancy Harrington and Myra Harrington(no dates of birth for all the girls unfortunately). But what i found interesting is that my mother told me that all the girls Mary, Eileen, Nancy and Myra had all left for England. Perhaps there was already another member of the Harringtons that had already been there from previous years and the girls went to stay with them. I'd be very interested to know more about Patrick Harrington and Catherine Harrington which were married in London as you said in 1850. Also you mentioned that Patrick Harrington is the son of John Harrington and Catherine Harrington(Hurley). I actually came across the name Hurley quiet a lot while searching either baptism and marriage records. In addition to that i noticed in your correspondance on this forum someone mentioned a wedding between John Harrington and Catherine Hurley on the 3rd of February of 1820. I also found that out so it must be correct. I'm wondering then, would that make John Harrington father of Michael Harrington(born 1820 my great great grandfather) ? Did they have more children?. I noticed someone mentioned they had maybe 5 children, Joseph(1822), Patrick(1825), Ellen(1821), Mary(1833), and John(1835) but no mention of Michael Harrington(Born 1820). Id be immensly happy if you read this message and im hopeful to hear back from you as soon as possible.
Kind regards
