Did William Hemmingway Born 1839 or Richard Hemmingway Born 1829 in Carbury Co Kildare emigrate to Australia or New Zealand prior to 1862 ?

My Grt.Grandfather Richard William Hemingway appears on the Otago goldfields NZ in 1862.I have been unable to find how he arrived in NZ. He claimed to be born in Ireland to William and Mary in 1839.I found a number of birth records for a Hemmingway family in Carbury (CI) Co,Kildare Ireland. who I suspect to be my Grt. Grandfather’s family. I suspect this because the names on these records are those of his three children eg Delphine Margaret Mary Ann, Sarah Jane, and Richard William.

I have found a Rich’d Hemingway of Ireland who arrived in Melbourne (Australia) on the Commodore Perry from Liverpool in Sept 1857. but have been unable to establish his departure from Ireland or entry to NZ

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

No centralised list of emigration records exists in Ireland - usually if there are passenger lists in existence they were created and retained (and later preserved) in the newly adopted country not in the country of departure. The recording of departures was therefore not seen as an important activity as the details of those entering the new country were of greater concern there than in Ireland - these countries the UK, the USA, Australia etc needed to know who was coming across their borders.

On that basis, do you think that you have checked all relevant sources your side?

There is a baptism for a Richard to parents William and Mary Ann (Church of Ireland) on 8th Sept in 1849 in Carbury. His godparents were not recorded. Other children to this marriage included: Mary Ann 1824, Margaret 1831, Thomas 1833, Mary Ann 1834 (earlier daughter must be deceased?), William 1839, Alexander 1840, Delphine 1844, William 1847 (again the earlier son was deceased?), Sophia 1849, Sarah Jane 1851. Most of the children are recorded as living in the townland of Ballinakill while the last child is recorded in the townland of Killina.

William and Mary Anne Fayle married on 27th Feb 1823 in Carbury. It may be the case that William Snr died in 1855 aged 48.

Perhaps if you tried to trace if any of his siblings left Ireland with him you may be able to establish through them how and when he landed in New Zealand/Australia.

    Best wishes

  • Many thanks Clare for your reply to my post. It seems this is becoming very complicated. If William born 1837 died it is  likely i have the wrong family..Although it is strange his age is right and that he should name his children the same names as the Carbury family Obviously I have a lot more research to do.

    Kind Regards

  • I logged into this site yesterday as I am trying to find information on Hemmingways and saw the above my GGrandfather is William Hemmingway born in Carbury, Kildare on 21st March, 1807 he married my GGrandmother Mary Ann Fayle in 1823 in Carbury he had all the children you mentioned above so Richard must be a de endant of mine. WilliamHemming died 4th March 1855 in Ballinakill, Carbury. His daughter Sophia Hemmingway born in 1849 is my Great Grandmother who married my GGrandfather John Reilly.  I am trying to find out where my GGrandmother Mary Ann Fayle was born and her date of birth and when she died.  I have searched on Ancestry snd Familysearch and have found nothing recently I found a marriage entry for William Hemmingway for 1823 and it had Mary Ann's maiden name as Feale would this be the same Mary Ann with maiden name as Fayle? You mentioned above that one of the daughter's Mary Ann could have died. Mary Ann born 1824 I have her  she married William Jarrett in 1856 she had two children first one born in 1871 which would make her mother aged 46 which would be very late so it does't make sense to me I have no information of Mary Ann Born in 1834. I am hoping you will be able to help me out finding out about the Mary Ann's.
