I am from Canada, and my ancestors came from Ireland. Census here in Canada says William Hopkins landed in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada in June of 1831 and was from Donaghedy Ireland. He would have been approx 25 years old.Any information about him would be much appreciated. His Sister Elizabeth came to Canada in 1848 by way of the same port. She was one year younger than William.

Thanks

Joe Hopkins

  • Joe,

Griffiths Valuation for 1859 lists a John Hopkins in the townland of Loughash, in Donaghedy. He had plot 8 which was a 22 acre farm. You can see where it was using the Griffiths maps:

This was the only Hopkins household in Donaghedy listed in Griffiths,. That doesn’t mean there were no others. People sharing houses and in very small houses weren’t listed. But it’s possible there’s a link to your family.

You can see how long John stayed there and who succeeded him by using the revaluation records on the PRONI website. They run through to 1929.

No Hopkins households listed in the townland by the 1901 census. Just 2 Hopkins households in the county in 1901. One RC, one Presbyterian. Do you know what denomination your family were? Donaghedy Church of Ireland records start in 1697 (with some gaps). RC start in 1854.

Found this probate abstract which indicates Hopkins still had land in Loughash as recently as 1951:

Hopkins John of Loughash Donemana county Tyrone farmer died 3 December 1931 Administration W/A Londonderry 31 July to John James Hopkins farmer and Edward Robert Hopkins prison officer. Effects £112 14s.

  • No luck on www.rootsireland.ie/ with birth/baptism for either William or Elizabeth I'm afraid Joe. There is a gap in the Hopkins Tyrone records between 1787 and 1823.

No luck in the Tithe Applotments (1823-37) either.

The nli RC register records for Donaghedy only start in 1854.
