Would like any family history or information regarding Hugh Ward born abt. 1805 and died in 1875 in Dublin City.  Hugh Ward was a Boot & Shoe maker living on James St. in Dublin City and was a member of St. James Parish on James Street also.

Hugh had a son Christopher Charles Ward that emigrated to England, it appears after his fathers death in 1875. Christoher Charles Ward lived the rest on his life in England.

Any information regarding Hugh or Christopher Ward or any other relative living or otherwise would be greatly appreciated!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

www.irishgenealogy.ie has Dublin city church records. The only Christopher Ward baptismal record was in St. James parish in 1844 but the father was not Hugh but Patrick.

I found one Hugh Ward baptismal record in 1808. See below.

  • Thank you Roger for taking the time to send the information on Hugh and Christopher Ward! I am somewhat confused, in that I have Christopher's marriage certificate which indicates his father was Hugh Ward and a shoe maker in Dublin?? Hugh is buried in Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin, as is a Patrick Ward (died 1847-age 84) in the same plot.  I know I have some missing pieces and I think it might have something to do with the general naming convention of sons and deceased children used at that point in time.  Once again, thank you for your reply!!

  • This link  http://www.dublin1850.com/dublin1850/xdubdir88.html#Walthew  takes you to a page from an 1850 Dublin city directory and you can see two listings for Hugh Wards on James St.

  • Hello Roger,
Thanks for sending the 1850 Dublin name index link.  Do you know if it exists for other years?  Regarding the two Hugh Wards - I was aware of the other Hugh Ward (the Tanner) and can't quite figure out if he is related in some way.  He died in 1859 as well as his wife Bridget.  Did find they were both buried at Glasnevin also.  Do you have any advice on where I might look to document that Christopher Charles Ward was Hugh Wards (Boot & Shoe Maker) son.  I  find the parish records inconclusive."

  • Christopher:

There are other directories for Dublin. Here is a great resource http://www.swilson.info/    I will see if I can get some assistance from someone much more knowledgeable about Dublin.

  • I found a likely directory listing in Pettigrew & Oulton 1840 for the Hugh Ward that died 1875, he's shown as H. Ward bootmaker at number 70 James' Street (see the far left column), also shown in the same directory is another Hugh Ward at number 21 (far right column), this one is a tanner. Hugh at number 70 must have been a doing quite well as a bootmaker, as these are not always shown in directory listings, possibly he ran a slightly larger business.

The 1834 listing, also Pettigrew & Oulton, shows Hugh Ward the tanner at number 21, but no sign of the shoe/bootmaker, and number 70 is shown as a Patrick Dempsey carpenter and builder. I had a check through the city parishes and there are a number of baptisms where the father's name is Hugh, at least three separate couples, but none in the James' Street area, and no children named Christopher or James.

It's possible that your Christopher was born to one of the Hugh Ward couples found in Dublin city around this time, but was missed out in the records, or on a page which has since been damaged, but I suspect that this Ward family, like many others, may have moved to the city from part of County Dublin, probably one of the parishes where the records do not go far enough back to cover a possible baptism for Christopher (based on a public tree on Ancestry it seems he was born c1847). I expanded the search area to Dublin City & County and the timeframe to 1827 to 1867, and a few additional baptisms show up for parishes in Co. Dublin where father is Hugh - e.g. Parishes of Clondalkin, Howth, Lucan, Donabate, Sandyford etc, but no sign of any named Christopher.

just in case you've not seen the Probate Calendar entry for Hugh, this is the link. I confirmed that Rev. Edward Kennedy named as Executor on the entry was Parish Priest at St. James's Catholic Parish at the time. There's no sign of a specific listing for Hugh in the street listing of Thom's 1872, and the address given of 105 James' Street for him is shown as shared between a Bridget Goveran draper, and a Post Office, so maybe Hugh had retired by 1872.

p.s. in Catholic registers names are often written in Latin so Hugo or similar for the father, and particularly older records the name Christopher can be written with a cross or X as a prefix, this standing for Christ - e.g. something like Xopher

    Hello shanew147,

First of all, thank you for responding to my questions. It appears you have uncovered a lot of information in a short period of time.
You are correct in regards to the two Hugh Wards on James St. in the period I'm looking into.  The older Hugh Ward (tanner) died in 1859 and was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery. He may be related to the other Hugh Ward but, I have not been able to document a relationship to this point.

The other Hugh Ward (boot & shoe maker) who I believe is my second great-grandfather died June 1, 1875 and is also buried in Glasneviin Cemetery.  I believe Hugh Ward (boot & shoe maker) lived on James St. until he died.  The address shown on the Glasnvevin interment record, 105 James St. I believe is related to Edward Kennedy P.P. Kilmainham Jail & St. James Parish.  I noticed the age given on the interment record was 70yrs. which I actually think should be 72yrs.  I undersand this is common place to get the age wrong and especially since it was not a relative handling the burial.

I did find the probate record you mentioned and the link to Edaward Kennedy P.P..  I tried to get a copy of the will at the National Archives and was told it was no longer available.

Thank you for the naming information and what variations of Hugh & Christopher might look like - this is something that I didn't know and just hadn't occurred to me

I did secure the marriage certificate of Christopher Charles Ward & Emma Agnes Hitchens in which Christopher indicated his father was Hugh Ward and a Shoemaker from Dublin, Irealand.  Just like you I have been unable to establish a link in records between Hugh Ward (boot & shoe maker) and Christopher Charles Ward.  I'm beginnning to wonder if Hugh might have raised Christopher but wasn't his biological father.  I guess anything is possible! I'm also wondering if Hugh Ward was married more than one time since there was a Philip Ward (died in 1834 & no age given) also buried in the same plot.

I have checked the births, marriage, deaths in numerous newspapers and haven't found anything of value in resolving all the questions I have.

Well, thanks again and if you have any suggestions on what to do next I would really apprediate a little guidance!!

    Regards,
                 Chistopher
