A James Luby and his wife Bridget are found living at house 24 in Cloonfad East (Kiltullagh, Roscommon) in 1911. James who is listed as age 45 (born c1866) is a Carpenter. In this household with him are his wife Bridget, age 43 (born c1868) and 7 children. It appears that James Luby and Bridget married c1901 as this census states they have been married 10 years. They have 7 children:
- Stephen Luby
- James Luby
- Patrick Luby
- John Luby
- Thomas Luby
- Anne Luby
- Margaret Luby
I also find a James Luby and his wife Bridget in 1901 living at house 15 Abbeyquarter (Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo). In this census James is also listed as a Carpenter (but he is additionally listed as a Publican). However, James and Bridget's ages are both given as 25 (born c1876) which doesn't match up too well with the 1901 record and they have no children in this census, so I am wondering if this is indeed the SAME couple or not? Slightly puzzled too why Ballyhaunis is listed in BOTH records, but in 1901 it's in Co Roscommon and in 1911 it's in Co Mayo? Does the townland Ballyhaunis straddle the county lines? Is it possible that despite the difference in ages listed here that this is the same James Luby in 1901 and 1911? Is that at all reasonable?
I'm actually looking for a James Luby, born 26 Jan 1875 to parents James Luby and Margaret Groark / Groarke. James Luby and his wife Margaret Groark appear in 1901 and 1911 at house 27 in Gorteenacammadil [Gurteen] (Kiltullagh, Roscommon) but their son James born 26 Jan 1875 is not in the household either year with them.
I have additional information that Stephen Luby (born c1902 who appeared in his father James and Bridget Luby's household in 1911) immigrated 01 Sep 1924 aboard the ship "Cedric" to New York City. Stephen listed his father as James Luby from Ballyhaunis Co Mayo and was headed to his Aunt's house in Chicago Illinois. His Aunt's name was Mrs. M. E. HENDERSON and she lived at 3841 Lowe Ave in Chicago. 1930 US Census records find Stephen in Chicago Illinois, but he is living at 3637 Lowe Avenue (just one block from his Aunt Henderson's known address) but instead of this being his Aunt's house he is living with an Irish born widow by the name of Mary CANAVAN (widow of a John CANAVAN) and this woman's maiden name appears to be JENNINGS rather than Luby.
If anyone can direct me to a place to find the c1901 marriage record for Bridget and James Luby, or to a trade directory for 1901-1924 for Ballyhaunis (either Co Roscommon or Co Mayo) I would certainly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance,

Kathy,
I cannot see a perfect match for the marriage in the civil indexes. The only James Luby marriage around that time was in Urlingford (Kilkenny) in 1899 which seems an odd place for this couple to marry. I think I?d be inclined to order a couple of birth certificates for the children to the 1911 couple. Firstly, to see the mother?s maiden name and secondly to establish where they were living in the early 1900s.
Martin Luby?s birth seems to have been registered in Castlereagh Jul ? Sept 1910 Vol 4, page 104.
John Stephen Luby also in Castlereagh Oct ? Dec 1902 Vol 4, page 97.
Patrick Joseph Luby was registered in Claremorris Jan ? Mar 1905, Vol 4, page 129. (Claremorris?s registration district includes Ballyhaunis).
I don?t quite understand the reference to Ballyhaunis in the 1911 census entry as being in Mayo. I don?t see that anywhere. (And Ballyhaunis is firmly in Mayo, not in Roscommon. It doesn?t straddle the borders of the 2 counties). Can you clarify where it says that?
I have seen publicans listed as carpenters before. I think they were sometimes able to use their quieter periods to knock up a few coffins and do other carpentry tasks.
I?d suspect it is the same couple in the two censuses, from the occupations and places of birth, and comparative rarity of the surname. The 1911 family had evidently moved about a bit as 2 children were born in Mayo. I wouldn?t bother too much about the age discrepancies. That was very common, with errors of up to 10 years being widespread. (People didn?t celebrate birthdays then and often had little accurate idea of their age. Nor did they care that much).
You could check the Griffiths revaluation records for the two townlands, in the Valuation Office in Dublin, to see if the 1901 couple?s departure from Ballyhaunis matches the arrival of the 1911 couple in Cloonfad East.

The 1840-1880 RC Baptismal records and all of the Graveyard Inscription records are on Findmypast website. Cloonfad Cemetery should have record of Gurteen (Gurteenacammadil) burials.
Here is the link to the Central registration office Copy certs can be ordered here for €4.
http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm
You might find more information in the various issues of the Cloonfad magazine. Each one has a record of BDM for a year earlier approx 50 years or so.
RIP.ie another website would have history of deaths in ireland for the last number of years.

Pardon for the confusion; I didn't say the 1911 census was in Ballyhaunis in Co Mayo, I stated that the 1901 census for this couple (click on the link!) was from Ballyhaunis in Co Mayo.
But as to WHY I am confused about where Ballyhaunis really is located - can someone explain why the Roscommon County Council lists a 2005 planning application (i.e., a building permit) submitted by a John Luby that gives his address as Gurteen, Cloonfad, Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo and further states that the application is for construction of a dwellinghouse, septic tank and percolation area, including all ancillary site works at Gorteenacammadil Td., Cloonfad, Ballyhaunis, Co. Roscommon. Is it any wonder that I wonder where Ballyhaunis is located? It's enough to drive a person mad ;-)

Gorteen or Gorteenacammadil is a townland in Co. Roscommon. The west side of the townland straddles the Mayo Roscommon border. Ballyhaunis which is the closest town is in Co. Mayo. The nearest main Post Office is in Ballyhaunis which is in Co. Mayo. The Post for Cloonfad and a number of townlands around Cloonfad including Gorteen used to come through the Ballyhaunis Post Office. Hence the address for these few townlands was Co Mayo even though they were actually located in Co. Roscommon.
-
Martin: Thank you so much for that explanation - it actually makes sense :-) You say that the post "used to come through the Ballyhaunis Post Office", does this mean that there is now actually a post office in Gorteen? If I addressed mail to Gorteen, Cloonfad, Co Roscommon with no house number and no street address would the mail actually make it to the intended party?

Address for Gurteen,
Gurteen,
Cloonfad,
Ballyhaunis,
Co. Mayo.
There would be about 20 houses in Gurteen - individual houses - sattered around i.e. farm houses. The closest village with shops is Cloonfad which has two or three shops and pubs and a Post Office.
It might be a good idea to send a Postcard to the Post Office in Cloonfad to ask them if A Luby family still live in Gurteen. I will be near there in a few weeks and I will ask for you also.
You can view the townland on Google maps probably go to Cloonfad, Ballyhaunis first. Gurteen is on the Right hand side coming from Cloonfad to Ballyhaunis

I have recently discovered that another of the children of James and Bridget Luby immigrated to the USA.
Their daughter Anne Marie Luby (aka Anna Maria Luby) born 1908 immigrated at age 20 aboard the ship "Cedric" leaving Cobh on 7 Oct 1928 and arriving in New York on 16 Oct 1928. Her passage was paid for by her brother Stephen Luby who on that date was living at 3637 Lowe Ave, Chicago, Illinois.
Anne Luby's place of birth on this passenger manifest is given as Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo (the 1911 Census for her says she was born in Co Roscommon). The passenger list also included the name of her nearest relative in Ireland, her mother -- Mrs. Bridget Luby living in Cloonfad, Co. Roscommon.
It would appear to me that Anna Maria Luby married sometime between 7 Apr 1930 and 11 Apr 1940 to a Mr. Malcolm BLUE (son of Malcolm Blue and Jane Russell, b 1912 Dumbarton Scotland). Anna Luby and Malcolm Blue are found in the 1940 US Federal Census living at 1331 East 31st Street, New York City and although they do not have any children listed in this census, I believe they had two sons and one daughter, one of them named James Blue, born 28 Jun 1946 in Brooklyn, New York and who may have passed away in 2011 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is not clear to me when Anna Maria Luby Blue died, but I think around 1983 in Manhattan NYC or Mt. Vernon in West Chester County, New York State.
If anyone from the Cloonfad, Co Roscommon or the Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo area have any LUBY and BLUE connections - I'd be grateful to hear from you.

Hello,
M E Henderson - is my grandmother Christine Margaret nee Henderson Duddy's sister. Her name is Mary Ellen. They all resided in Chicago and are [God rest their souls] buried in Holy Sepulcher Cemetery, Chicago.
Stephen Luby did stay with her for a while. According to my mother [Christine's daughter], Stephen was an actor in Chicago with some local acclaim. I understand that he was remarkable good looking. I will keep trying to get info for you.
God bless you~

My greatGrandmother was Bridget Luby, born to a "Pat" Luby & March 1846.
She married a Michael Flatley from nearby Gurrane, Mayo at the chapel at Cloonfad on 27 January 1867.
She then moved there. I'm hoping she's related to this family that everyone is posting about.
And, yes, Ballyhaunis is the closest big town and my Flatleys are all buried there. They affiliated to St. Mary's parish.
Thanks, everyone!

Hi Brian
It is likely that you are all related to the same Luby family, so it might be useful to share whatever info you have.
I had a look for parish records for any children to Bridget and Michael but couldn't see anything. There was a civil birth record for a Michael born in 1867 who may be a son as they were married in January of that year. As it is a subscription site I cannot see anything further (rootsireland.ie)
Those living in the townland of Gurrane would likely have gone to mass in Logboy Church (Parish of Bekan) and the local graveyard would be Tulrahan. You can see a photo of it here: http://www.panoramio.com/photo/35357316
Best wishes

Found this info in a Cloonfad Parish publication. It's a house-by-house account of who lived/lives where. I actually spoke with Alo Luby just a few weeks ago when visiting Gurteen with my father and brother. My Uncle Michael lives on the same Gurteen Road. Here's what was printed:
Now we come to Luby's, Paddy Luby married Anne Melia from Ballyglass. They had three children; Jimmy Joe died when he was young (he was engaged to Nora Kelly from the village). Mary Ellen married Jim Green from the village and Billy stayed in the home place. Billy married Mary from the Ballyhaunis area, they had three sons and two daughters, Jimmy, Anne and Philomena live in England. Alo came back from England with his wife Anne and two children to live in Gurteen. Gabe and his wife Kathleen and three children also came home after some time in England to live in Gurteen. Billyand Mary moved house over towards the square and that’s where Alo and his family came to live. Mary, Billy, Anne and Kathleen all died within a few years of one another. Alo still lives there with his son Dominick and his daughter Patricia lives in Galway.
Here's a link to the entire publication from 2013.

There is no Civil Marriage record for James & Bridget.
To answer your question re the James and Bridget in Abbeyquarter in 1901 being one and the same couple noted in Cloonfad East in 1911.
I initially noted that the first three children were noted in the 1911 census as being born in Co Mayo while the latter 4 children were born in Co. Roscommon. Then I acquired the birth certs of Stephen and the twins Thomas & John. Stephen had the father as James Luby of Ballyhaunis a licensed Publican. The mother being Bridget Ronane. Thomas and John’s father was James Luby a Carpenter based in Cloonfad and the mother was Bridget Ronan. There you can definitely say these were one and the same family.
Cloonfad is in Co. Roscommon but the closest main Post Office is in Ballyhaunis so the address used is Cloonfad Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo.
If you are using the Familysearch.org website which are based on Civil districts – Ballyhaunis is in the Claremorris district/location while Cloonfad is in the Castlereagh district/location.
There is no post office in Gurteen, but there is one in Cloonfad which is only 2km away. Gurteen is a rural location so no street number or house number is currently required.
A Bridget Ronayne was born to a Stephen Ronayne and Anne Hunt of Cloonfad on the 25/12/1872. Alo may know if this is the correct Bridget and what became of this Cloonfad Luby family.
For pictures of the Luby Family you can check Cloonfad Magazine Website and go to the following years: 1993 pages 25 & 47. 1994 pages 20-25 and page 35. 1996 page 46.
