My paternal grandfather, Hugh Paul Magone, was born near Mayobridge, County Down in 1881 and emigrated to the US shortly after birth. I am looking for anyone with the surname of Magone still living in Ireland or anyone who has any knowledge of any descendents. His father's name was also Hugh Magone and his mother's maiden name was Agnes Fegan. Any assistance would be appreciated!

I can’t see a birth for Hugh Magone anywhere in what is now Northern Ireland around 1881, to a mother with the name Fegan. However I do see a birth of a John Magone on 25.7.1877 in Newry registration area where the mother’s maiden name was Fegan. It might be worth viewing that to get the family’s exact townland etc. You can view the certificate on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:
(You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2 to a view a certificate).
I searched for the parents marriage but could not find it. I think this might be the parents in 1911:

From the census information you will see that the parents had 8 children, 6 of whom were still alive in 1911. Instead of giving specific places of birth, they have written "3 in Ireland" and "5 in America", from which I infer that 5 of their children may have been born in America. The parents married around 1878. Could Hugh Paul have been born in America? (There’s no sign of the family in Bavan in the 1901 census. Could they have been in the USA?)

Just 23 people named Magone in Co Down in the 1901 census. So just a handful of families. The modern phone book lists 10 Magone entries in the general Mayobridge area (postcode BT34).

Magone family
Hello Dianne,
From searches the baptism of Hugh Aug 6 1881 Parish of Clonallon, Co Down. Parish record details http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Down&parish=Clonallon&churchid=441
Other details you no doubt have Hugh Senior b. 21 Jan 1854 in Mayobridge ; married Agnes Fagan 20 Sep 1878 at Mayobridge Catholic Church; permanent address Deer Lodge Vally, Montana USA.
The Civil Parish of Clonallon shares similar boundaries as the Catholic Parish of Clonallon and from the Griffith Valuation it would appear the Magone name falls primarily in the townland of Cabragh.
The PRONI site may offer up some useful information with the Valuation Revision Books http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/search_the_archives/val12b.htm which detail the transfer of land tenancy and as the name does not appear in the 1901 census for Cabragh the Will Calendars include details for two Magones of Cabragh

Good morning, I am also searching for Magone from the same area. My Great Grandfather Peter Joesph McGowan was born March 16 1885 or 1883 in Mayo Bridge, County Down. He came to Canada, joined the military and married my Great Grandmother Mary Lively (Also from Mayo Bridge but born in England), who was 20 years younger than him. According to their marriage certificate his parents were Michael McGowan and Ellen Small. The only Michael and Ellen I have been able to find were Michael Magone and Ellen Small married June 1 1883. On my Great Grandfathers military documents he also lists a brother William who also came to Canada and was living in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada in 1915. I cant find any information for him after that. Michael and Ellen did turn up again on another marriage certificate for a Daniel Magone married in Silver Bow, Montana, US in Oct. 1910. I have searched travel documents but there is always some major differences....Patrick Joseph birth year 1876, or for William mother listed as Anne or Annie, nothing that matches. Does anyone have any information that may help point me in the right direction? Or even a connection?
