Patrick and Margaret were my grandfather's (John Patrick O'Gorman) parents according to his application to marry my grandmother here in the US. He also included that he was from Thurles, in County Tipperary. I am looking for information on all three of these individuals. I believe John Patrick was born around 1899 and came to the US in about 1927. He might have gone back to Ireland in about 1943.
Thank you for any efforts.

Welcome back!
I thought this message looked familiar and then I found our exchange from September. I assume you do not agree with the information I provided in September? How can I help further?

Mr. McDonnell,
I so very much appreciated your information. My issues with it are as follows: My Grandfather used the name O'Gorman, not Gorman. He stated on a document that his mother was Margaret Dunne which according to your information would have been his father's first wife but not his mother. Your John Patrick was born in 1902, mine in 1899. Those are a lot of inaccuracies to ignore.
Considering the common names, I was hoping for person closer to the John Patrick I am looking for will surface.
My cousin and I have had some additonal conversations with her father. He remembers his father leaving the US for extended periods of time and believes he traveled between the States and Ireland. During a trip in 1943 he did not return to the US. It is quite possible he died in Ireland around that time or chose not to return. Thus, maybe I would be looking for records regarding my John Patrick after 1943 in Ireland.
Your interest and assistance is so much appreciated.

Hi Colleen,
Any possibility John P was born as late as 1907 !
A John P Gorman appears on a number of shipping Crew records as a Radio / Wireless operator. The death on board ship on 16th March 1945 of John P Gorman aged 39 in Port of Houston Tex. of Diabetis !. Nationality is given as U.S. but earlier records mention "Irish".
Above would tie in with your Uncles memories of extended trips abroad and his non return after 1943.

Colleen:
I would not be concerned about O'Gorman versus Gorman at least around 1900. I think when you get to 1911 and later there was more nationalist fervor and people started to use the O' in more situations. When you look at the 1901 census there are many more Gormans compared to O'Gormans.
If he was born in 1899 then he should be in the 1901 census but when you look at all the John O'Gorman/Gorman records around age 2-4 in Co. Tipperary, none had parents Patrick and Margaret.
I can't explain the difference between Margaret Dunne on the 1930 document compared to the information I located which would indicate his mother was Alice and that Margaret had died in the early 1890s.
My collegue, Gerlish, has an interesting possible alternative.
