Sarah was born 29 January 1816 in County Tipperary.

She married William Baldwin in Nenagh on 7 September 1834.  He was 23 a soldier in the 30th Regiment of Foot that was garisoned in Nenagh at the time.  The Regiment moved from Nenagh later that year and in 1835 was in Plymouth, Devon before departing for the West Indies.

Sarah did not accompany her husband to the West Indies and returned to Nenagh where she gave birth to their son William who was baptised in Nenagh on 15 August 1836; sponsors were Timothy Coonan and Bridget Carroll.

It is presumed Sarah would have returned to Nenagh as that is where her family lived.  Unfortunately I have no idea who her parents are,

Sarah was reunited with her husband in 1839 when his Regiment moved to Newfoundland.  Four children were born in Newfoundland. The family returned to Nenagh an 1950 where another son John was born in 1850.  In 1852 the family moved to New Zealand

It is noted that there is a Thomas Shiels living in Grace's Street, Nenagh in the Griffith Evaluation in 1848 who could possibly be her father.  Grace's Street is not far from the Military Barracks.

A Philip Sheil and Sally Kennedyhad children Michael and Richard baptised in Nenagh in 1831 and 1839 respectively.  Could Philip be Sarah's brother?

Any help in tracing Sarah's parents and/or siblings will be appreciated.

Sarah and William are my great great grandparents.

Our volunteer in Nenagh posted this reply.

    Hi David (spaceman),

First of all just to let you know there are still 'Shiels' in Nenagh. I found a 'Land Assessment Record' for Thomas Shiels for 1848 in Nenagh (Ireland Valuation Office Books 1831-1856). There is a Baldwin family living in Nenagh at the time and there are a number of documents relating to them, you did not state whether William was from Nenagh originally except that he was based here in the barracks with the 30th Regiment of Foot. I could not find anything on Sarah or William except for their marriage in 1834 in Nenagh, Killaloe, Co. Tipperary. I found Mary Jane Shields birth on the 31st August, 1880, Nenagh, her father was Henry Shields and her mother was Anne Shaw Shield (Ireland Births & Baptisms 1620-1881). Mary Anne Shields birth on 3rd April 1879 in Nenagh, her father was Henry and her mother Anne Shaw.Catherine Shields birth on 3rd April 1879 in Nenagh, father and mother the same as above(twins). Caroline M. Baldwin got married in 1861 in Nenagh(Irish Marriages 1845-1958). Susan C. Baldwin got married in 1853 in Nenagh(Irish Marriages 1845-1958).

  • Hi John

    Thanks or your response.

I will certainly follow up your suggestion to contact the Genealogy Centre.  I did visit them some years ago and they suggested I go across the road to the Parish Office as they had some transcripts  This confirmed the basic information i had about Sarah's marrrriage to William and also the baptism of their son that I was not previously aware of.  I will contact the Centre again and follow up with another visit in July during our forthcoming visit.

William Baldwin was born in Waterford in 1811 (baptised 1 September).  I have earlier information about William and will also be visiting Waterford during our visit.

    Regards

    David

  • Hi John

I contacted the Heritage Centre and unfortunately they couldn't add to the information I had.  They also said they were not currently aware of the Shiel surname in Nenagh town.  As you indicated there were still Shiels in Nenagh could you possibly ascertain contact details for them.

    Regards

    David
