Hi,

I have recently followed my 3 x Gt Grandfather's records from Scotland back to Boghead near Muckamore Co. Antrim and would like to learn more.   Joseph 'Albert' Gillmore was in the British Army from 1805 - 1849 starting out as NCO in the Enniskilling artillery 27th regiment and went to fight in West Indies. After Promotion to Ensign he fought in the Pyrenees and Portuguese Artillery where he became a Lieutenant. After the Napoleonic Wars finished he was one of 6 Colonels who put together regiments and armoury and sailed to fight against the Spanish in Venezuela. I have found quite a bit about him in books written on the subject.

He then went to Scotland with his wife and chn where he was a Barrack Master at Ayr, Perth and Glasgow and finally retiring in 1849 aged 62 after 26 and 1/2 years in the army.  He was living in Boghead House near Muckamore Co.Antrim until  his death at Green Island in June 1863.

I am now trying to find out more about who he is descended from.  1851 and 1862 Belfast Directories list him under Peerage and Gentry living Boghead House.  He is also in Griffiths Valuation.  His wife was Ann Agnes English from London.  I think his father would have been John Gilmore and perhaps he was a lawyer.  There was a John Gilmore Snr and a John Gilmore Jnr of Boghead House in 1809 when they were trustees for John Robinson of Dominica.
I have found a Wilfreda Gilmore, daughter of John Gilmore of Boghead and she married John Dunbar of Co. Down.  Their son was named John Gilmore Dunbar and he did very well financially and had a huge mansion in Co. Down.

Unfortunately the Gilmore/Gillmore family do not feature in Burke's Peerage except under John Dunbar Buller's info and I am having trouble putting the two John Gilmore's together and with spouses and family.   John Gilmore of Boghead is also in Griffiths Valuation Records.  That is about all I have and I would just love to get further back.  Hope someonce can help,   Vicki

  • Vicki,

You don’t say what denomination Joseph Gilmore was but I’ll guess Church of Ireland. In which case he probably attended Antrim Church of Ireland. (There is a Church of Ireland near Boghead, at Muckamore, but I think it only dates to the 1840s.) So you could search Antrim Church of Ireland records for his baptism and that of siblings etc. Their records go back to the late 1600s. There’s a copy in PRONI.  He could be buried at Muckamore graveyard. You might expect him to have a gravestone.

I assume you have seen this link to a mention of the family in connection with Dominica:

Otherwise I can’t see anything about him in PRONI or elsewhere in local on-line records.

You could try the Registry of Deeds records in PRONI (or the originals in Dublin) to see if any mortgages or marriage deeds were registered for the Gilmore households. Those records start in 1709. (That involves a personal visit, and take a bit of time to search over a lengthy period).

  • Vicki,

No they are not on-line anywhere, so far as I am aware. You would need to get a researcher to go into PRONI to look them up for you. You could also ask PRONI if they will do it for you but they are quite expensive. Something like £18 sterling per 15 minutes work. A researcher would probably be cheaper.
