Looking for John Sheridan, the following is what I know:
- Death certificate states he was 73 years old at death, 21 Apr 1892, so he was born about 1819/20,
- Death certificate lists parents as Patrick Sheridan and Mary (no maiden name),
- Death certificate states he was in America 36 years so he emigrated about 1856,
- He was married twice, 1st wife was Mary Eslund (from son's death cert, hard to read), 2nd wife Sara/Sarah (no maiden name),
- Son Edward born about 1859 so John & Mary married prior to that. Sara/Sarah shows up in 1880, 1890, and 1900 census.
I checked RootsIreland.ie for a baptism for John and found two with parents names of Patrick & Mary: 6 May 1818, Co. Longford, District of Longford, and 11 Mar 1822, Co. Cavan, District of Cavan. No parish listed for either record.
The Tithe Applotment for Co. Caven lists 20 entries for Pat* Sheridan, and for Co. Longford there are 3 entries for Pat* Sheridan. I can't pick any of these entries since I don't know the parish. And, there are 47 entries in Griffith's Valuation.
So, this is going to be a difficult task without some HELP!!
Thank you for any help!

Welcome back!
The two baptisms were in the RC parishes for Longford town and Cavan Town. The corresponding civil parishes would be Templemichael and Urney.

Thank you Roger for your quick reply!
I found the church register at NLI for the two entries for John Sheridan. Next I looked at the Tithe Applotment for Patrick and John Sheridan in each of the parishes. In the parish of Urney, Co. Cavan (1826) and under townland of Rosscolgan I found two entries, one for John Sheridan and one for Pat & Thos Sheridan. I'm thinking that if my John Sheridan was born about 1819 he'd be too young to be listed in the Tithe records. Based on naming conventions, I'm wondering if the John in the Tithe record is possibly my John's grandfather and Pat is his father.
The parish of Templemichael, Co. Longford doesn't seem to have the connections of names, but I'm not finished with that part yet. Can get confusing after a while of switching back and forth from 2 or 3 different documents.
Well more work tomorrow. You've given me a start!
Thank you for your help,
Allison
P.S. I found at Irishancestors.ie a page to find townlands, parishes, etc., for 1901. Question: for the townland of Rosscolgan, the parish is listed as Annagelliff. What is the difference between this and the parish of Urney?
Thanks!

Allison:
Urney is the parish just to the northeast of Annageliff. Not sure about the information on irishancestors.ie My reference book shows Urney and when I go to the 1911 census return for Rosscolgan, it also shows Urney.
