My great grandmother Ellen Driscoll emigrated to Boston, USA alone apt 1889. I do not have the shipping record but she had a trunk from the Cunard line. She has variously been listed in the records as Ellen, Helen, Helena. She married Patrick Lynch in 1892 in Boston. Her marriage record and various census records indicate a birth year of 1870. The marriage record lists her parents as John and Mary (no last name). My great aunt, Betsy, said that Ellen spoke of two brothers in Ireland, Jim and Mike and said that Jim was a bandmaster in Bantry. We have a photo of this and of the two men together.  My great aunt said that Ellen told her that "grandmother was a Sullivan".  I don't know if this means my g-aunt's grandmother (Ellen's mother), or Ellen's grandmother was a Sullivan.  I do see a 1901 census record for a Mary (widowed) Michael, James and John on Barrack Row, and a 1911 record with just Michale and James. I also find a general Driscoll grave inscription at the Abby cemetery for Driscoll's of Barrack Row, but can't really connect them to Ellen for sure. As there are no forenames associated with the listing I can see online.

Patrick Lynch- Ellen's husband was also from Bantry.  I don't know if they met there or in Boston. Patrick's parents were John Lynch and Johanna Healy married in Bantry about 1862. We believe that Johanna's mother was a Cronin. (Sponsors at Patrick's baptism in 1863 were Dennis Healy and Mary Cronin). I don't know much more about these families, either. Most of their children settled in the Chestertown New York area after emigrating to America.

If naming order is of help, Ellen Driscoll and Patrick Lynch's  children, in order, were: John James, Anna Frances, Mary Agnes, Helen Louise, Jane Mary, Catherine Veronica, Margaret Patricia, Elizabeth Regina.

A group of family members will visit Bantry in late May. We'd love to know more about the Driscolls, as well as the Lynch and Healy families from that area, including where they are buried so we can pay our respects.

Thank you for any help you might offer.

  • Hi Mary Catherine, there is a record on www.irishgenealogy.ie of a birth of an Ellen Driscoll born 20 of December 1870 to Jeremiah Driscoll and Margaret Sullivan address Liskean registration area Bantry

You can find the official birth registration here https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…

You might be able to find Ellens siblings using the above site, note that civil registration was not rolled out in Ireland till 1864 anyone born before this time will not have a civil birth, baptism or marriage  record you will need to try the church records for these records.

I will look for the other information next, hope this helps,

Thank you! I have found Patrick and some of his siblings baptism records in the Ireland Catholic Parish Registers for Bantry. but none seem to indicate more than the name of parents, the date and the name of the child. Nothing about where they lived exactly or what happened to Patrick's parents, John Lynch and Johanna Healy. The Griffiths Valuation lists 8 different John Lynchs living in Kilmocomoge parish (i.e. Bantry) in 1852- and so I've not been able to narrow it down. John and Johanna's children, for which I can account, were Patrick (b.1863), Mary Frances or Minnie (b.1865), John (b. 1867), Honora (b.1870), Lizzie (b.1872), Daniel (b.1874), Kate (b.1875), Jeremiah (b. 1879) and Jane/Jenny Josephine (b.1883). All but John, Honora, Lizzie and Kate are known to have made it to America. When Jenny last travelled to IRE (a few years after emigrating to America) she lists brother John Lynch as residing in Bantry. I attach an image of the address, which I can't make out but maybe you would recognize as a clue? Ancestry transcribes it as:

Person in Old Country Name John Lynch
Person in Old Country Residence Place Trigid Garade. Bantry. Co. Cork.

I don't see John Lynch, Sr.  or Johanna in the 1901 or 1911 census. I'd like to try to figure out where they were buried.  I also attach a photo of John Lynch, Sr. I do not have one of Johanna.  Thank you so much for your help!

  • Hello again, if you look at the birth record the address is clearly stated at Lisheen Bantry

    See https://www.townlands.ie/cork/bantry/kilmocomoge/kealkill/lisheen/

Did you search the death records on www.irishgenealogy.ie?

  • Thank you! A terrific idea and I’ve started that. So much information including street location in most instances. I’m having good luck with the Lynch side, the Driscoll side is a little harder. What is the best source of burial information? Were death notices or obituaries published anywhere locally? I appreciate your help so much!!

  • Hello, if you check the civil death records it will tell you more about the address, but as Johanna's father was a farmer I believe the townland of Lisheen is the correct address, a townland had no house numbers or street names most of the time. www.irishgraveyards.ie  is an option not sure if they have all cemeteries, a lot of old graves and grave yards do not exist anymore.  If the family moved the death record should give the last address make sure if you find the death record to check who the informant was

  • The birth record that you list for Ellen Driscoll lists the parents as Jeremiah Driscoll and Margaret Sullivan.  I don't think it is her birth record as her parents were John Driscoll and Mary Sullivan as per Ellen's marriage information and the baptism information from her brother James. Census: I believe it is her mother Mary, with brothers James and Mike, listed in the 1901 census on Barrack Row and James and Mike listed in the 1911 Census on Barrack Road.  I believe Mary's death was Jan 29, 1911 which lists her son, James, present at her death on Old Barrack Row.  She was 65.

My great-grandmother Johanna Healy was married to John Lynch.  I don't know who her parents were or when she was born, but assume it was between 1835-1845. Johanna's death record is January 5, 1915 on Chapel Street, Bantry in the presence of her son, John Lynch. Johanna's husband John predeceased her on February 12, 1891 in Bantry at a place called Mill Rock, in the presence of his wife, Johanna.

In either case- I don't find in the records a listing of a father listed as a farmer.  Can you help me clarify this?

It makes sense, if they were born outside of the town, or were farmers, that they may not be buried in the Abby, but everything that I've discovered thus far indicates that they lived and died in the town.

Thank you again for your help with this!
