I am looking for information on my ggg-grandfather, James Veitch.  I know that he married Emily Armstrong on Sept. 20, 1824 in Sligo (marriage announcement attached).  The announcement says that James was from Dublin.  They eventually ended up in Killeshandra, Cavan.  They had five children: Jane, Frances, James, Margaret and Caroline.  James was born in 1798 and died on Aug. 11, 1868 in Cavan.

I have had no success finding any other information on James or any of the children or Veitch relatives.  It's possible he may have been born in Scotland.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you!

  • Hi Eileen

Do not get sidetracked by the fact that the marriage record states that James's address is Dublin, that is all it is an address, it does not mean he was born there.

    I did find this:

    December 22, 1853

    MARRIAGES.

Nov. 15, in New York, Mr. Bernard RAFFERTY, formerly compositor on this journal, to Fanny, daughter of James VEITCH, Esq., of Killeshandra. ( this was published in the Anglo Celt Newspaper in on december 22 1853)

    And this:

    PETTY SESSIONS COURTS.
Place where held, Day, and Name of Clerk.

    Cootelill, Saturday; Robert M'Minn.
    Killeshandra, second Thursday; James Veitch.
Killyglasson, Blacklion, second Thursday, Edwd. Little.

I will have a look to see what I can find,

    Regards

  • Yes, Bernard Rafferty and Fanny (Frances) Veitch are my gg-grandparents. I've tried searching in Cavan as well.  I found the same 1862 County Cavan Directory which lists James Veitch under Petty Session Courts for Killeshandra on second Thursdays.  I also found information on Griffiths Valuation for James Veitch.  But I have not found any information on any of the children - birth, baptism, etc.  And I cannot find any information other than the death of Emily Armstrong Veitch. So, when I saw the marriage announcement saying James was from Dublin, I thought I might see if I could find anything.  I would appreciate any help.  Thank you.
