Hello group members. I continue to search for the specific place of birth of my great grandfather Laurence Mannion who was born in 1830 in County Galway. He emigrated to America before 1850. The basic information I have about his homeland was a reference he made in a journal that he wrote to a Darby, Darley or Farley (may actually be Dermot) Manion of
White Post Office ( White Park?)
Kars Glannaiada (Glennamaddy ?)
County Galway Ireland.
We had a great trip to Ireland in 2009 and I hope to return another time. Turns out Dermot was not an uncommon given name. I have multiple records of people who could be my Laurence but never settled on one. So if anyone has information that they would like to share, I would appreciate receiving it.
Laurence settled, July 1851, in the small New York state town I grew up in, Haverstraw NY. It was the center of brick making in the Hudson River valley. His second wife, Anne Gibson of Caven City, County Caven is my great grandmother. Their daughter Bridget married Thomas Welsh and are my dad's parents, another Thomas Welsh.
Thank you for any help.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
There are four townlands in Co. Galway which start with Whie but none are near Glennamaddy. Likely it was a place name that did not become an official townland. The RC parish records for Boyounagh/Glennamaddy parish do not start until 1838. I assume you do not know his parents names. Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?

Thank you Roger. I have done the Ancestry DNA testing but I do not know what autosomal DNA testing even is. Can you explain it?
When my DNA testing came back from Ancestry it showed results of 95% Irish, 2% Finland/Northwest Russia, 1%Scandanavia, <1% Great Britian and <1% European West. So you could say I am pretty much Irish, with a bit of Viking, Norman and Brit.
Can any clues be gotten from the given names of Laurence and Dermot? Maybe you could also tell me the names of the townlands and Parishes that begin with Whie. Thanks, again Beata

The Tithe Applotment Books 1823-1837 have a record for Darby Mannion, White Park,Clonbern.. Clonbern is in NorthEast Galway. There are still quite a number of Mannions in that area today.-Liam Irwin.

Actual date of Darby Mannion record in T.A.Books is 1830'.Darby' is a commonly used form of Dermot. OSI Mapviewer shows a townland called PARKBAUN which is most likely where you are looking for. BAUN is obviously an Anglicization of BAN(pronounced BAWN)-the Irish-(gaelic)-for White. To see.-1-select OSI Mapviewer.2-Type GLENAMADDY in Search box.3-Parkbaun is just West of Glenamaddy.- Liam

Liam has provided a great lead so I will limit my response to DNA. If you took the Ancestry DNA test that is an autosomal DNA test which looks at all of your DNA and identifies matches on both your maternal and paternal lines. Have you reviewed your close matches? Some of them will have family trees which you can compare with your tree. You can also search based on surnames. Let me know if you have questions.

Roger and Liam, thank you for your assistance.
I spent some time today looking at the Tithe Applotment records and the OSI viewer. You have given me more leads than I've had in a while.
It's funny Roger, I do get some good hits from my DNA matches but I've never seen a response from someone in Ireland. Who knows, one day one may turn up.
As I hope to go back to Ireland, I will look up you fine folks on my return. Thanks again. Beata

Hi, Beata! By any chance are you BWelsh71 on Ancestry? If so, you've got a match with my father who is listed as Vincent Gavin. I haven't looked at my DNA matches yet.
I have a Lawrence Mannion in my family tree. He's my great grandfather born in 1866 in a Townland called Gorntagoyne which is just west of Dunmore. (Dunmore is west of Glenmaddy.) Lawrence's father's name was Darby Mannion. I haven't found too many Darby's (or Dermot's) as I've looked through church registers, etc. Not many Lawrences either, for that matter. Given the common practice of naming children for grandparents and other family members, I wonder if there is any family connection here. Seems like a good possiblility.

Thanks to all the group members from Ireland for your assistance. While on a vacation to my hometown in New York state I had a chance to take a picture of Laurence's first application to become a US citizen, which a cousin has. The application was filed on March 15, 1849.
Lawrence Manion states that he was born at White Park in the County of Galway, Ireland on or about the First of September in the year 1829. He is about nineteen. He arrived at New York on April 29, 1847.
So this was the first time I had seen this information and it confirms for me the exact place he was born. Someday I will get back to Ireland and go to White Park. That will be a very good day. Beata

Dear Beata, It is possible that your great grandfather, Lawrence Mannion, was the brother of Martin who was the 7th son of 7 sons - Martin was born in 1828. Martin's father was Diarmuid. They all lived in Whitepark, a townland of Glenamaddy. In the 1901 and 1911 censuses, they lived at Parkbawn (spelt Parkbaun in 1911). I don't have the names of other siblings.
Your great grandfather emigrated at the time of the Great Famine.
Where in NYC did your great grandfather live and did he live in any other parts of the USA? Do you know much about him for example, what he did for work?
It is possible that his possible brother Martin would be my great great grandfather and Lawrence would be my great great uncle. Lawrence was a family name appearing in the subsequent different generations. Mannion of course is a fairly common name in that part of Galway, so there may not be a connection. There were for example three Mannion families living in Parkbaun in the 1901 and 1911 censuses. So it is highly possible that there may not be a link!

Martin,
I'm already in the Mannion and Donelan facebook groups as well as the Glenamaddy, Dunmore and Tuam ones. Thanks for the invitation. I guess I should try the Clonbern one as well. I know I've got lots of small DNA matches that seem to originate in that area of Galway and even Roscommon. Thanks for the invite.
Deirdre.

Hello again and apologies for taking so very long to respond to your messages. Life has been busy and then there is that Covid pandemic. I have been rereading your responses. Thank you for them all.
I am the BWelsh71 on Ancestry and I have an open tree as Welsh New York. My ancestor Laurence lived in Massachusetts for a few years and then came to my home town of Haverstraw NY. That is where he died. He worked in the brickyards and owned some property. His daughter Bridget is my grandmother on the Welsh side. Sadly, I never met her since she died in 1934.
I will look for both facebook groups and request to join. Thanks again for all you do. Beata
