My great grandfather William Shannon emigrated to Canada with his brother James in 1856. He was born in Ireland on Sept 20, 1834. His father was Henry Shannon and has mother was Ann Maria. This information was derived from death and marriage records in Canada. I'm interested in finding out more about him and his wife. I found a family tree that had him coming from the Sligo area and had his mother's maiden name as Coulter. In addition I found a Henry Shannon in Doonowla, Kilmacshalgan in the Tithe books. There also appeared to be Coulters in the area. Any additional information that could help me confirm this would be appreciated.

What was the religious denomination for the Shannons and Coulters? The subscription site Roots Ireland does not have a William Shannon baptismal record with father Henry. It appears that the RC and Church of Ireland records for Kilmacshalgan start in the 1860s or later which means a record would not be available.

It appears that the Henry Shannon you found in the 1833 Tithe listings is also in the 1858 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing in the same townland. https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/sligo/kilmacshalgan.htm

The 1901 census for Dunowla shows a Robert Shannon household with an oldest son named Henry. Possibly this Robert is a son of Henry Shannon. The older Henry Shannon appears to have a brother Robert in the Tithes so I'm not positive that Robert Shannon is the son of Henry or Robert. Also from the census record I can see that the family was C of I.

  • Thank you so much. William and James were noted as belonging to the church of England in the 1861 census which I think is consistent?

Not sure where this leaves me. The family tree I found on the library edition of Ancestry that led me to Sligo had a brother Robert noted with a note indicating that he died a day before boarding a ship to Canada.

It also mentions a number of other brothers and sisters  most with no information

Andrew, Eliza,Jane (died in her teens), John(died as a baby) and Henry. I believe Henry joined them in Canada later as there was a Henry living with James in a later census.

There was also mention of an Uncle Patrick.

Any advice or thoughts are very welcome. I'm trying to find a way to contact the owner of the tree.

Church of England is consistent. Hope you find the owner of the tree. Not having church records will be a big impediment.
