Hello everyone,
I am after some help in tracing my Irish ancestry.
On my grandmother's side I have traced it back to a Hugh and Mary Carroll (nee Kilmore/Gilmore), he was born approx 1811 and she was born approx 1816. They came to Bradford, Yorkshire approx 1850 with 3 children, James born 1841, Catherine born 1845 and Winifred born 1847. They had a few more children in England. I did find mention in a book that the Irish who came to Bradford, Yorkshire, were from Sligo, Mayo, Laois or Dublin. Their daughter Catherine married a James Durkin (born approx 1834) from Ireland, although they married in Bradford, Yorkshire. I have found all of these names seem to meet in Sligo and am hoping someone may know something further.
Thanks, Di

Welcome to ireland Reaching Out!
I searched on Roots Ireland for all of Ireland for baptismal records for Carroll children with parents Hugh Carroll and Mary Gilmore and got no record. Likely, they were baptized in a church that does not have records back to the 1840s. Same result looking for the marriage record.
Carroll was a very common surname and there were about twenty counties in the mid-19th century that had more Carrolls than Sligo. Durkan/Durkin is mainly a Mayo surname.
Have you considered autosomal DNA testing. You may match someone with Carroll or Durkan connections.

Thank you, i'll look into it.

There was 1 James Carroll in Bradford from Sligo. Others had only Ireland as birthplace.
Hugh Carroll & family shared lodgings in Bradford with Gilmores and Durkins who were related to each other.

Yes, I noticed that Maggie.
I am doing the DNA test this week so hopefully that may give me more links.

Hello Di
There are Kilmores around the Achonry civil parish, in the Tithes 1828 and Griffith's 1858. That spelling of the name seems centered around those parts. In other areas of Co Sligo it seems they went by Gilmore. Do you know what religion your people were?
My g-g-grandmother Mary A Kilmore was b.~1827 in Ballymote. She married Thomas Scanlon Jan 1848 in Kilshalvey RC Parish; and the residence they gave at the baptism of a child in Jan 1849 was Quarryfield, which is in Cloonoghil civil parish. They emigrated to the US in 1851.
I've been hunting around this particular area (via web only, so far!) for my Kilmores and related kin, and would be happy to help you at all in locating yours, if they do come from there. Glad you've done the Dna test!

Hi Di,
It's been awhile since this thread was active, so not sure you will get this. Recently I have found a new possible family connection to Durkin of Tobercurry vicinity. I'd appreciate any information or ideas you might have.
If you would like to compare Dna results, my kit number at Gedmatch is UY709991C1
Thank you,

Hi Laura, I have a Durkin (I don't know her first name) born in 1790 that married into my Brett line (she married James Brett who was from Achonry). I ran your Gedmatch number against mine & although I'm new to exploring DNA it seems we have a match at 18.9 cM at 4.8 generations.

Hi Jaime,
Would you share your kit number here, or email me via Gedmatch? Appreciated.
My ancestral surnames in Co Sligo are Scanlon and Gilmore/Kilmore.
Thanks,

Hi Jaime
We share a few matches in common from my match list at about that distance, 4-5 generations. My tree does not go back that far, and the surname BRETT has yet to come up in our shared matches. One of these matches I have been in contact with has documented maternal roots in Sligo-Mayo. We do not share more recent generation surnames, but we do have the ancestral Tobercurry locality in common. I will email you directly through your Gedmatch email, and look forward to collaborating.
Thank you,
Laura
