My great grandmother was Mary (Maria) O'Brien.  She met and married Thomas Gilman in Kilkenny in 1887 where he was serving in the British Army, and when his tour of duty finished they returned to Derby, England.

Mary's parents were William O'Brien and Elizabeth Uzell. I have their marriage and Mary's birth certificates.  The marriage certificate shows Elisabeth's father as an Adam Uzell, occupation Gardener. Both William and Mary were living on North Circular Road in the Farranshone area of Limerick City.  They were married at St Munchins RC Church in January 1867.

I have not been able to find any subsequent siblings for Mary, but I have found a record of a marriage between an Elizabeth O'Brien (widow) and an Adam Cooke, (Bachelor) in September 1877 at Kilcooley Church C of I.  Elizabeth gives her father's name as Adam Uzell and both Elizabeth abd Adam giVe thier residence as Renaghmore.  I presume William O'Brien has died between the birth of Mary (Dec 1867) and the subsequent marriage to Adam Cooke. I have searched long and hard of William O'Brien in and around Limerick, with no success.

I think I have found Elizabeth's father,Adam Uzell, who was born abt 1797, and died at Renaghmore in the district of Kilcooley in the Union of Urlingford. on 18 April 1879, age 82, Widower and a Farmer.  He had several siblings: Jacob (d 1887 age 86 Renaghmore),  Peter (d 1888 age 75 USA), John (d 1871 age 65 Carlow).  Mary (unsure of surname) was their mother,  who died 1873 age 96 at Renaghmore, and probably born there in 1777.

From 'FamilySearch'  Adam Uzell is shown as father of the bride to Elizabeth (my ancestor) in 1867, also to  William Uzell/Eliza Graham 1856, Tulla, Clare, and Mary Ann Uzell/James Russell in 1860, Burris, Tipperary.

I am trying to find more about the Uzells.  I would like to know if Adam's ancestors were Palatines, moving firstly to Rathkeale early in the 1700's before, over the generations, moving on to Kilcooley.  Do Uzells still live in any of the areas I have mentioned?

  • Hi, I haven't done much searching but my mother is a Uzell and in a strange coincidence my sister in laws husbands mother is a Uzell to. There are very few Uzell in Ireland and we think our great great grandfathers were brothers from Tipperary. I hope to really look into this in more detail soon

  • The Uzell surname hasnt survived in Kilcooly parish or surrounding areas of Tipperary/Kilkenny but the 1901 census has two Uzells born in Tipperary ; Peter on Luke St and Edward on Grenville st., Both are Church of England(Ireland) and both are coal labourers. Renaghmore and Kilcooly parish are very close to the Slieveardagh coalfield incidently.

  • THe Uzells were Palatines I believe and part of that community in Kilcooley parish along with other families such as the Cookes, Ruttles and Switzers all of whom came originally from Rathkeale.
