  • Adele's mother was Margaret Melia ( or Malley), a daughter of John Melia and his wife Bridget Roach, of Tuam. In the 1860s the family lived in Killaloonty.

Adele and her son Edward ( mistakenly listed as Elwood) were visiting with her Uncle John Melia in rural Killaloonty at the time of  the 1911 Census.

  • Hi,

Thank you for sharing the above information.  Actually, Adele's son's correct name was Elwood.  Their sur name was Bromley.  Elwood moved to the United States shortly after the death of his mother.  He was living with his aunts Mary ("Mamie") & Norine Manning in 1925 according to the 1925 New York census.  Regretfully, I don't know the name of his wife but he had a son named Elwood as well.  His son was born in 1932 in Yonkers, New York.  Both the father and son attended the wake of John ("Jack") Manning, Adele's brother, in 1958.  They made contact with other descendants of Peter Manning & Margaret Malley/Melia at that wake, the Morans.  In or about the early 1970s, the granddaughter of Elwood Bromley, the great-granddaughter of Adele Manning, made contact with Elizabeth Manning and Helen Manning, who were living with their sister, Frances, & brother-in-law Joseph Gest in Bethpage, New York.  Joseph & Frances Gest were my parents.  Elizabeth & Helen were the daughters of Peter Joseph Manning (1879 1920) & Anna Kenny (1872-1949).  Peter Joseph Manning was the eldest son of Peter Manning & Margaret Malley/Melia and he was Adele's older brother.

  • Hi Swimcat,
We are both descended from John Melia and Bridget Roache then. It’s great to hear about your branch of the family. Have we already been in contact?

I haven’t found Elwood on any New York census yet, but I have seen immigration forms when he travelled ( as Edward) back to New York in 1925. On those forms I see that he gave his next of kin as his uncle ( actually his great uncle as it was Adele’s uncle) Michael Malley, at Michael’s W. 62nd St, NY address.
I have photos of Michael, so I should add him as an ancestor from Tuam on Irelandxo.

    All very interesting

  • Thanks, Helen.  Yes, I think we have corresponded!  I recall you had much more information about Michael Malley than my family did.  I would love to see the immigration documents.

The family lore is that Elwood came to the United States when he was 18.  The 1925 NY census indicates he was living with Mary (Mamie) and Norine Manning at that time.  They were daughters of Margaret Malley, Michael's older sister.  That census lists his age as 17.  His son was living in the NY Foundling Home at the time of the 1940 census.  I'll see if I can attach copies of those censuses in a future email.

I'm not sure if this email will reach you directly.  I have been having difficulty logging onto Ireland Reaching Out so I thought it easier to try to send the email directly.  My direct email is <maureeng1@optonline.net>.

Family lore is also that Adele Manning Bromley died in London in 1922.  I have a photo of her with a note on the back indicating it was taken in London in 1920.  But, I've not been able to find any records of her death.  My mother was born in 1920 and her father, Peter Manning, died when she was six weeks old.  She didn't have as much contact with his family as did her older sister, Margaret Manning Moran.  Margaret Manning was born in 1904 and kept up fairly close relationships with the Manning and Murphy families (descendants of Bridget Malley, who married John Murphy).
