Alexander Shaw was born in Co.Cavan, possibly Killashandra. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1865 at the age of 20 on the 'Dauntless'. He claimed to be an orphan with no siblings, so we have no information about his parents or extended family. He was Church of Ireland. He married Esther Logan (from Co. Tyrone) in Auckland on 12 March 1870 and they had two daughters and four sons. He died in Auckland on 6 July 1909.
