Migrated to/Born in USA

Ann Casserly’s parents were Michael Casserly and Winifred Beirne of Cloonybrennan, Civil Parish Elphin, County Roscommon.

Ann was baptized on 16 December 1823 as found in the records of the National Library of Ireland (NLI). Also found in the NLI records are siblings Bridget(*1820) and John(*1829).

It is estimated the Ann Casserly emigrated to the United States about 1850. Her marriage to Thomas Hunt and their first child is next found in the Catholic Church records of St. Louis, Missouri.  Bridget Hunt is baptized at St. Xavier’s Catholic Church in October 1851. Other children follow with Mary Ann Hunt, baptized at St. Patrick’s Church in April 1853 and John, baptized at St. Lawrence O’Toole’s Church in January 1856. This historic church is shown in the profile photo.

Bridget does not survive long, but Mary and John will live well into adulthood. However, father Thomas Hunt does not live long beyond John’s birth. The St. Louis Death Registry shows his accidental death due to a fall in June 1856.

There is a US Census record of 1860 showing Ann with her two children in a household working as a domestic servant.

In July 1862 Ann Casserly Hunt marries Michael Corley in St. Xavier’s Church. This union produces three children. Michael is born in 1863, Katherine in 1865 and Margaret in 1867. Husband, Michael Corley, does not live to see the birth of their third child Margaret. The St. Louis Death Registry records his death from cholera on 22 August 1866.

The US Census of 1880 of St. Louis shows Ann Corley’s household includes all of her children. Living at 1633 East 19th Street in St. Louis they are next door to Edward Hunt and his family. Edward Hunt may be a relative of her first husband Thomas Hunt. Edward Hunt married Anne McGittrick in Ballymote, County Sligo on 27 February 1854.

Ann Casserly  Hunt Corely dies in 1913. Her Obituary states she was proceeded in death by children Katherine and Margaret. It also requests that newspapers in Melbourne Australia please copy.

One of Ann's children, John T. Hunt, was a stone cutter who in 1902 was elected a member of the US House of Representatives for two terms. His daughter Helen is the only known biological granddaughter of Ann Casserly.
