Annie (Nannie) Patricia Stoney

Annie (Nannie) Patricia Stoney 1896

Back to List

Annie Patricia Stoney was born at Montpelier, Tallaght on the 13 July 1896, the daughter of Patrick Joseph Stoney and Catherine (nee Norton)..Her father died aged 33 in the South Dublin Union in 1897 and mother Catherine remarried on the 28th of November 1899, to Edward Quinn of Old Bawn Tallaght.

Always known as "Annie". She spoke a little in later life about her stepdad as Ed Quinn (a farm labourer of Old Bawn Tallaght) and losing her brother "Tommy" Stoney tragically young in WW1. Brought up as step-daughter of the "Quinns". Left Ireland as didn't want to be "on the farm" and wanted more from life. Annie came to England as a "Lady's companion"..

Married Bertram Charles Edward Barrance (a butcher) in Jan 1922 at Uxbridge, Middlesex England

Annie bred dogs (Afghan hounds, Alsations and Poodles) professionally for many years; Kennel Club registered "of Nicholdene" as living in Nicholls Avenue, Hillingdon, Middlesex at this time. She continued to breed poodles in Essex until her passing, but not professionally.

Died at Thundersley, Essex England in 1974, leaving 2 grown daughters and their families.

**********************************************

From discussions, Irish Quinn family were never sure why she had left Ireland. She made contact only once, at start of WW2, to ask if the Irish 1/2 sisters would take in her children (Peggy & Mandy) for the duration of war. This request was refused as the Quinns could not manage any more kids ........... Annie apparently took this badly and there was never any further communication. The Irish family thought she had died in 1941 in London, until her grandson Leigh Bolton contacted them and gave full story (several connected Irish family trees still show her dying in 1941 and with incorrect name of Catherine).

Her name seems to have continued in family however as one of the Quinn descendents is "Annie Patricia" Benton.
