I do not know when my GG Grandfather Anthony Carroll left Eire.  His birthdate and location and those of his wife Catherine Mary Josephine O'Daly are written in his bible, which we have.

In the late 1850s he was living in Lebanon County western Pennsylvania, working on an iron furnace.  In 1861 he volunteered with the 4th Pennsylvania Cavalry in America's Civil War.  Due to being in a military hospital three years later when his enlistment was complete, he needed to write to the government in order to request his war pension.  he kept a copy of this document, and another one covering the years before and after his military service.

During the war Anthony fought in some of the more critical, and bloody battles, including Fredericksburg and Antietam. Monuments to his unit may be seen on the battlefields.

After the war he returned to the Cornwall Iron Furnace. In 1865 he married Catherine Mary Josephine O'Daly of Sallybrook, in New York City. They had two daughters in Pennsylvania. Then around 1870 they moved west to Wilton Wisconsin, taking advantage of the USA's Homestead Act, where they began to hack a farm out of 40 acres of woodland. Two sons, excellent musicians, followed.

Anthony passed away in 1881. Catherine followed in 1888.
