Bernard Kivlan was born in County Leitrim or County Roscommon about 1832.

His parents are thought to be Patrick Kivlan and Mary Dier.  He married Ann Maginnis about 1854, and their first three children were born in Ireland.

His oldest son John Kivlan was baptised at Mohill Parish, County Leitrim in 1860. The family moved to East Haven/Fair Haven, New Haven Co., CT between 1860-1864. Four other children were born in East Haven/Fair Haven and the family was part of the St Francis Parish. Bernard was naturalized in 1874.

It is rumored that he was largely responsible for clearing the land for residences in the area that was known as "The Annex."

He died 31 January 1892, and his funeral mass was held at St Francis 2 February 1892.  He is buried at St Bernard Cemetery in New Haven in the family plot.
