Migrated to/Born in USA

Bernard Meehan emigrated from Ireland to New York with his parents, Cornelius Meehan and Catherine McGrath, in 1869 when he was 15 years old. He married Bridget Kelly in 1874 in Brooklyn and died in a tragic accident in 1906. His death certificate from New York states his parents' names which led me to research the family. I found a marriage record for Cornelius and Catherine McGrath and a baptismal record for a  Bernard from Cloonclere, Manorhamilton, County Leitrim. I, of course, do not know if those are "my" Meehans but I have a few leads on the Meehan-McGrath connection in that area. I'll update as I learn more.

  • Bernard’s father, Cornelius or Cormac Meehan, continues to be a mystery. Bernard’s parents are listed on both his baptismal record and death certificate as Cornelius Meehan and Catherine McGrath. I just returned from an amazing trip to Leitrim, Cloonclare, Kiltyclogher and the town land of Carraun where I’m quite sure "my" Meehans originated. I was lucky to meet a number of cousins. All my DNA connections point to a Cormac Meehan and a Margaret Rooney but I still can’t prove this second marriage.
