Delia was born Bridget, but was known as Delia for most of her adult life - which led to a child corrupting that to Deedie. All of her grandchildren and great nieces and nephews knew her only as Deedie. In later life, Deedie was officially known as Elizabeth - the name recorded in her obituary.
She was born in Curraghmore, Co. Galway, one of nine children of Patrick (Patsy) Walsh and Mary Reddington.
Deedie emigrated from Cobh in April 1893 to the U.S. She married James Patrick Veale on November 28, 1906 in New York. Working as a domestic, she lived, worked and raised a family in New York, residing in Manhattan, as well as in Queens in Woodside and later Flushing.
Deedie gave birth to 6 children. Michael Vincent died as a child. Two of her daughters (Kathleen and Theresa) became Sisters of St. Joseph, her son, James was a Jesuit priest who ministered in New Orleans and Albuquerque, and her remaining two daughters, Mary and Eileen married and raised their own families in New York and Pennsylvania.
