Della was born Bridget Donnellan. She immigrated to the United States from Co. Galway, Ireland in 1904 at the age of 22. The name Della is a variance on Delia which is short for Bridelia, which in turn is a nickname for Bridget.
On 3 April 1918 Della married John P. Carlin, a Chicago Policeman, who had previously immigrated from Co. Meath, Ireland in 1897. The couple had two children, John P. Carlin (1919-1963) and James F. Carlin (1921-1993).
Della is buried in Mount Carmel Catholic Cemetery, Hillside, Cook County, Illinois, United States with her husband, John Carlin, their son, John Patrick Carlin and his second wife, and Della's sister Marie.
Della's parents were James Donnellan (1856-1938) and Sarah McGann (1857-1940) of Newcastle and Shoodaun Townships, Athenry, County Galway. Della's siblings, most of whom immigrated to the Cleveland, Ohio area in the United States, except Marie who went to Chicago, were:
