Bridget (née Barrett) McGreevy 1829

Back to List

Bridget Barrett of Ballinvilla (b.1829) the eldest daughter of Matthew & Susie Barrett, married a neighbour, John McGREEVY (aka McGarry), in Croghan in 1852.

Initially, the couple lived in Drummin (a subdivision of Derrylow) on the northern boundary of Ballinvilla. They may have shared a boundary with Matt Barrett’s farm. Relations between

father and son-in-law do not appear to be good (possibly because of dowry arrangements relating to crops).

PETTY COURT SESSIONS

1/10/1852: John McGreevy (1827-1902) of Drummin (part of Derrylow), Killukin accused Matthew Barrett of Ballinvilla of threatening to stab him with a scythe when taking away crop, his property. (Referred to Quarter Sessions) Witnesses. Pat McGreevy, Thady McCormick & Darby Filan for complainant.

They moved from Drummin before the 1857 Griffiths Valuation and were in the nearby townland of Drumerr in 1860.

In the 1860s this Barrett-McGreevy family emigrated to Wakefield, England where their daughter Mary Anne was born in 1866. When Brigid McGreevy was in England the remainder of her Barrett siblings (to include Sabina Barrett Freeman) emigrated to the US in 1864.  John worked as a ‘stone quarryman’ and by 1867 the family had settled in the village of Normanton, Yorkshire.

At the time of the 1871 Census Brigid & John McGreevy & family were residing in the village of Normanton (Wakefield, Yorkshire, England).

By 1881,  Brigid seems to have been recorded as "Susan" (b. 1829 Ireland) which was the name of her mother. The Magreevy family were residing at 5 Providence Place, Normanton and John was working as a "Navvy" (a labourer employed in the excavation and construction of a road, railway, or canal) and their sons were coal-mining.

By 1891, their daughter Mary Ann (née McGreevy) White, previously of Barnsley, was widowed with small 3 children and back home living with her parents and siblings. Again, John's wife is recorded as "Susan".

Susanah McGreevy (1829-1901) died on 17 February 1901 and was interred at Normanton Lower Cemetery.

  • I believe Dominic McGreevy was my great grandfather, his son John McGreevy was my grandfather. John died in 1934, my mother told me that he was killed in a motorbike accident. he'd bought this bike with money won on the football pools. John left 4 daughters, my mother Margaret, Monica, Kathleen and Marie.
