Migrated to/Born in New Zealand

Bridget Roughan was born in Tulla, County Clare in +/-1840/1841. Parents unknown but might be Mathew Roughan and Mary Donohue.

Bridget emigrated to Lawrence, South Island of NZ in about 1867. She married Irish Revenue Policeman and then NZ policeman Edward Morton in Lawrence in 1873 and died in Invercargill in 1923.

There is another large clan of Roughans still living today in Lawrence who emigrated from Tulla at about the same time descendants of John and wife Catherine (Clooney) Roughan and their children John, Margaret, Bridget (born in Tulla 1836), Connor and Cornelius. John and Catherine were married in Tulla in 1829 and emigrated first to Australia in 1855. John and family then followed the gold rush moving to Lawrence in 1871 and establishing the clan in NZ.

I consider that my Bridget and the other Roughans living in NZ are related but I cannot establish any direct connection after enquiring with Roughans still living in Lawrence.

ANy assistance would be apreciated.

  • I have not had any response to my enquiry about Bridget Roughan.

There were plenty of Roughan families in Tulla during the early-mid 1800s and many of whom emigrated.

i would appreciate any response that might prove useful.

    Many thanks,

    Dennis Morton.
