Migrated to /Born in Canada

Hi! I think my g,g grandmother, Catherine Cahil, may be from Killenaule, County Tipperary, Ireland. I think she was born about 1824, Catholic. She married a John Broderick and emigrated to Canada 1848-1851. I found her and husband with sons, Cornelius (11 years old) and Thomas (3 years old) in an 1851 Census for Kleinburg, Ontario, Canada. I can't find ship. Nor can I find marriage date or children's baptismal records. They are referred to as Inmates on the Census. Maybe a workhouse? Says they were living in a shanty and notes they lost a baby girl within the last year (1850-1851). Catherine died in 1853. Possibly she died in labor or right after delivery. I can't find a grave either. Thanks so much for looking for me. Jennye Broderick

There is a listing for Catherine at URL below. Word of mouth as to the year they arrived and years born for Catherine and John.

  • According to the Catholic Parish Registers, 1655-1915 for Kerry, Listowel, 1802-1826 Catharine Cahil was born the 13th of November. Notes the name of Elizabeth Scanlan and Thome Cahill. If this person is my great, great grandmother she was recorded being in 1851 Census Canada East, Canada West, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia with John Broderick(30), sons Cornelious (age 10) and Thomas (age 3) and death of young female infant girl as of 1851. The family is referred to as inmates and living in a shanty. Catherine and John had a baby girl named Eleanor baptised at three weeks old on March 28, 1852. There was a final attempt at birth in 1853 and that is the same year Catharen/Catherine died in Vaughan Township, York County, Ontario, Canada.

There are several other Catharine Cahils born the same year, different parents and siblings so I am not sure this person is correct. Thanks. Jennye Broderick

  • Today's date: January 25, 2023. The source you direct me to is Ancestry.com. I see no reference to Catherine specifically. I'll try to use Ancestry but haven't had much luck with Irish records.

Secondly I found a Catherine Cahill on a Catholic Parish Register for November 13, 1824 with mother Elizabeth in Kerry, Listowel, Ireland but I can't make out other words esp. in Latin. Can you help me?

    Thank you,

  • So, after going to Ancestry.com I used the card catalogue for Europe and then Ireland, Parish Catholic Registers, 1655-1915, then entered the Diocese, Parish and Year 1812-1827, then month January 1824. I found Catherine. Thank you SO MUCH!!! Jennye
