Catherine Fox : Short Biography

FOX Catherine. Catherine age 20 left Dublin in the 1850’s with her younger sister Sophia and boarded the “Northumberland” which arrived in Adelaide in 1850. Catherine and Sophia parents were Patrick Fox and Rose Carney.

 It is possible that Patrick and Rose also travelled to Australia of this we cannot be sure. In any case alarge number of Catherine’s extended family (The Fox’s) settled in Australia and no more so in the NSW town of Urana.  

In Catherine's extensive travels through South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. Research shows that she was with members of the Fox family when she was most needed.

 In her late 50’s Catherine settled with her second husband Joseph Campbell  and her four surviving children in a small New South Wales Town, Urana. Catherine died there in 1890. There are many of Fox family buried alongside Catherine

Catherine’s story is of interest to me due to the hard ships endured. Not long after arrival in Adelaide Catherine married John Joyce and travelled from South Australia to the Victoria Gold Fields giving birth to three children along the way. Louisa, Mary Ann and Hubert. Unfortunately, husband John and second born son John die in Binalong NSW leaving Catherine with three children.

Catherine then travelled to Lucknow near Orange NSW where she married Joseph Campbell a widower. Catherine had a fifth child Isabella. Isabella was born in the newly established Victorian Gold Field of Growlers Creek now called Wandiligong.   

As stated above the family settled in the NSW town of Urana where Catherine, husband Joseph and daughter Louisa now lie in rest. The rest of the family married and moved to locations throughout NSW and Victoria.     

Catherine was from Dublin and the family had sufficient means for Catherine and her sister Sophia to travel as “Cabin” passengers. This may have been to provide some protection for the young Sophia.
