Catherine Hurley 1905

Back to List

Catherine (Kate) Hurley, 1905-1984, my maternal grandmother, went to America in 1925 and worked in Peabody, Mass. US 1925-1930 for Mary L. Woods 1875-1958.

She lived in Koscuizco Street, Peabody.

Her brother John (Jack) Hurley lived in Chicago and married a Kerry girl there called Hannah Courtney.

Granny declared her intention to become an American citizen  but returned to County Kerry c 1930 and married my grandfather, Timothy Sheehan, in 1938.

She told me that she had 3 marriage proposals in America and that one of them even followed her back to Ireland.

I would love to find out more about her time in America. For many years she maintained correspondence with friends in America but sadly all that correspondence is lost.

My small granny was a quiet, gentle, loving woman who spoke little of her time of being a 'greenhorn' in America.
