  • I am seeking information about the family of Catherine Hickey born around 1836 possibly in Castleconnell, Limerick. The parish was listed as her place of birth on a birth certificate for one of her 11 children. The other children's birth certificates all state her place of birth as Limerick.

According to Catherine's marriage certificates (she was married and widowed three times), her parents were John Higgins and Margaret Hickey.

Catherine emigrated to Australia arriving in June 1852. On the "Mangerton" with her was a woman named Mary Daffy (as far as I can ascertain, Mary committed suicide in 1825) who was a witness at Catherine's first marriage to James Stewart in August 1852. James Stewart was born in Sunderland England, circa 1823.

The couple had one child, John Albert Stewart in June 1853 before James died in a drowning incident in December 1853.

Catherine married James Morris Downey in March 1854 and the couple went onto have ten children before his death in 1883.

In 1895, Catherine married David Findlay a Scottish widower. He passed away in 1908.

I have gone through all the marriage certificates for Limerick and can find no record of a  John Hickey marrying a Margaret Higgins however there are no records for Castleconnell pre. 1850

There is a John Hickey in the Griffith's Valuation Record Information. In 1847, he was renting a house on a farm that was rented by Matthew Lynch in Castleconnell aka Stradbally.

I need some ideas on where to go from here. As John Hickey is a common name, unless I can find further info. it's impossible to know if I have the right person. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Also, I believe that Catherine was Catholic as her children were baptised and her first two marriages were in St Mary's Catholic Church.

Her last husband David was not, and I'm guessing that is why she is buried in the Church Of England section in the Ballarat Cemetery.
