Back to List

Catherine Murray was born in Ireland about 1816. I know she had a brother called John who was born about 1818 also in Ireland. I do not have a place of birth for either Catherine or John but I know that Catherine sailed from Cork aboard the Duchess of Northumberland arriving in Australia 27/02/1835. According to the passenger list she was going to a 'relative' called Mrs Higgins. I do not know the relationship Catherine had with Mrs Higgins. I have found  outduring research that Mrs Higgins was the mother in law of Andrew Murray who was the overseer of the Government  Gardens of  Parramatta and later became the superintendant of Carters Barracks .

Catheine married Laurence Hyland in The Cowpasture in Australia 19/10/1841. They went on to own & run an inn in Parramatta called the Prospect Inn. Catherine died in 1889 in Parramatta. John meanwhile was in the Commissariat joining as a clerk in 1838. He appears on the 1861 census in London as a widower and a boarder in Hackney. He is a Deputy Assistant Commissary General. He marries Mary Manedville Todd in 1867 about 12 months after he retires from the Commissariat where he was an Assistant Commissary General.  He dies in London 1874 at the age of 57 leaving a pregnant wife & young children. I do not know the parantage of eith Catherine nor John other than on his marriage certificate to Mary Mandeville it states his fathers name was Hugn Murray  and that he was deceased. There was no mention of Hughs occupation.

I would love to be able to find the parents names and if there were any other brothers & sisters. Both John & Catherine were Roman Catholics.
