  • John O'Neill (born 1836 approx) and Catherine Boyle (born 1842 approx) are shown as having married in the Drumaul diocese. The original document is described as 'mutilated'. However, from what I can read, their marriage took place between June 1859 and April 1861. The witnesses were David or Daniel McCashion and Hannah Boyle.

Catherine gave birth to their son, Hugh, in 1861. The family are listed as living in Randalstown, Co. Antrim but no address is specified although another document is showing Drumaul House. There are 'sponsors' listed on Hugh's christening record and they are John and Bridget Boyle.

In either 1861 or 1862 the family came over to England and are listed as living in Tebay, Westmorland (now Cumbria) and they continued to expand their family. John and his sons (and subsequent male ancestors) are all listed as working on the railways in one role or another.

I have not been successful in finding out anything about John and Catherine's parents or any other family members. I know that O'Neill is a common name in the Randalstown area so this has complicated my search further.

  • Witnesses to the marriage of John O’Neill and Catherine Boyle in 1861 were Hannah Boyle and Daniel McCashion. It is unclear whether Catherine and Hannah were siblings. Later there is a record of a marriage between Hannah Boyle and Bernard O’Neill - not sure whether either of them were related to John and Catherine.
