Migrated to/Born in USA

Hello, to my Irish cousins!  My Gggrandfather was Charles Cone Deasy and he was born around 1832.  In 1848-9 he married Bridget Dooly (their spelling) and set sail for America--arriving in 1849 and settled in Bordentown, New Jersey.  I've searched for years trying to find info on him in Ireland and have been there twice but couldn't locate anything about him. In his bible, he had the word BANDON written and also John Deasy, Buffalo, NY.  From this, I figured he was from Bandon and had a relative named John who was living in Buffalo, NY but have never had any luck finding anything along this line.  I do know that they came to Bordentown, NJ, because Bridget had family living there.  Charles' mother also wrote him a letter from the Trenton, NJ area but she did not give her name other than "your mother."  She spelled the Deasy surname "Deacy." Some people have said that his middle name "Cone" was probably short for Cornelius. However, he named his son Charles Cone Deasy, Jr. so it seems that his middle name actually was Cone.  Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Steve Deasy

Nashville, Tennessee

  • Just a few thoughts on your post. Since your ancestor emigrated during the Great Famine could he have set out from the Bandon workhouse?

There are a few similarities to my Deasy ancestors. They were from the Clonakilty area, near Bandon. I posted on James Lawrence Deasy, or Dacey, my g-grandfather, on this site. He emigrated in either 1862 or 1866, eventually settling in New York City.  He had a brother named John. I will check to see if he could have been in Buffalo and post again if I find him. Charles is also a family name.

It sounds like Cone was short for Cornelius.

    Good luck,

  • Thanks for contacting me!

My GGgrandfather named his son Charles Cone Deasy, Jr., so I feel almost certain that his middle name was Cone.  He was a fine looking gentleman who could read and write and dressed impecably.  A person from California sent her GGgrandfather Deasy's photo to me and they look almost identical.  Please check and see if you can find any link.  He married Bridget Dooley (Dooly as he spelled it) and I have a DNA link to a Thomas Dooley who has not responded to my request on Ancestry.Com.  I'd love to know exactly where and who they were.

    Thanks again!

  • You're very welcome. I'm not on Facebook, but will keep a lookout if I come across anything while I'm researching.

    We are likely distant cousins.
