Charles Irwin was born in 1824 in Manorhamilton, County Leitrim, in the civil parish of Cloonclare.
As a young man, Irwin enlisted in the British military forces.
When he was 33 years old, Irwin was posted as a private with the 53rd Regiment of Foot during the Indian Mutiny.
On the 16th of November 1857, was severely wounded during an assault in Lucknow, yet this did not prevent him from being one of the first men to enter a building under heavy fire. His bravery prompted his fellow soldiers to nominate him for a Victoria Cross. He was awarded the prestigious medal on the 24th of December 1858.
Iriwn continued to serve in the military until 1854 when he recieved his discharge and returned first to England, then to his native Ireland where he spent the rest of his days.
Irwin died on the 29th of March 1873 and is buried in St Mark's Churchyard in County Fermanagh.
