Charles Lynott was a shopkeeper/publican in Ballina. He was the maternal great-great-grandfather of Thin Lizzy frontman and rock legend Phil Lynott (pictured above). 

In 1850, Charles Lynott married Mary Ann Shields (daughter of George Shields) in Ardnaree Church of Ireland (Sligo side of Ballina) in the parish of Kilmoremoy.

  • Both were members of the Church of Ireland and from Ballina town.
  • The marriage was witnessed by Jane Shields & Guy Boyes 
  • The civil registration of non-Catholic Marriages records Charles' father as John Lynott, Writing Clerk. Mary Anne's father was by then a pensioner, suggesting he was in the military. 

In 1856, Charles Lynot is recorded in Ballina at #2 Arran Street* and

In 1855,  Charles Lynnott is recorded as having a "house as a store" at #5 Durkin's Lane aka Durkan's Lane. 

Their son John Lynott's marriage record, which took place in Dublin's Pro-Cathedral in1885, records both Charles & Mary as his parents.


*In 1860 a Charles Lynott & Sarah Ann Vaughan (Catholics) began baptising children in Ballina (first at King Street). By 1864, Charles & Sarah Ann Lynott were living at Arran Street, where Charles is recorded as a publican. Some children were recorded at Garden Street (an extension of Arran St). By 1872, Charles Lynott of Aran Street was a Commercial Traveller and they moved to Dillon Terrace the following year.  Mary Ann, Eleanor Victoria, Edmond and John Lynott were his siblings.

  • In 1585, their lands were significant enough to be recorded in the Composition Book of Connacht.

  • In 1641, Hubbert Lynott was recorded as a rebel in Co. Mayo.

  • By the 1830s Lynott was most numerous in the Mayo parishes of Crossmolina and Kilfian.

Lynott aka Lionóid son of Lionot (possibly a diminutive of Leonard, certainly from the same root, and meaning 'little lion.'  Spelling variations include Lynot, Lynnott, Lynet or Lynett. They were quite numerous in the counties of Mayo, Donegal and Derry.
