Charles McLaughlin married Bridget "Biddy" McBride in 1844 in the Parish of Cappagh, County Tyrone, Ireland. They raised a family as farmers on rented land in the townland of Dunbreen. In 1863, the family moved from Ireland to Slatington, Pennsylvania, USA. His place of residence date of birth is an estimate based on the 1870 US census for Washington County, Pennsylvania, in which he reported he was 56 years old. He worked in the slate mines with his two older sons. At a later date, the family moved to Philadelphia, but there are scant records of them there as a family. The youngest son, Arthur Mathew McLaughlin, married and raised a family in Philadedelphia and died at age 40 of typhoid fever.
