Hello, It is so interesting that we both are looking at Daniel Hogan of Terryglass, Tipperary. My 2x great -grandfather Daniel Hogan was the son of William Hogan and Catty Purcell. He was born in Terryglass in 1830 . He had a brother John b.1828, a sister Catherine b,1833 who emigrated to Victoria, Australia,a brother Patt b.1836,a brother Wiiliam b1839, a sister Honora b.1842.Their baptismal records all list Kilbarron,Terryglass in the diocese of Killaloe.

Daniel married Catherine Higgins and they had a son Patrick b. 1855 in Terryglass, mygreat grandfather Michael b. 1857 Liverpool on their way to Trenton, New Jersey where Catherine was born in 1867 .

I thought that the Daniel who worked Cappanamear in 1853 was my Daniel and that the Patrick Hogan listed was his brother but now I am not sure.  I do know his Dad, William worked Carronanglough, Garryyard and Stonepark in Terryglass.

Terryglass is such a small place, maybe we are cousins!

  • I also have a Daniel Hogan in my family tree from Co.Tipperary.

My 3rd GGM was Honora Hogan from Co. Tipperary dob 1821 or 1824/5 or 1831 depending on what document you look at. She married an Englishman, Edwin Sleigh in London in 1847. Her father Daniel who had been a tailor was deceased according to the marriage certificate however there is another Daniel Hogan on the certificate who was a witness (brother or uncle perhaps).

Honora died in London in 1894 and according to the death records she was 63 years old (that would make her dob 1831).

The only record that I can find of a Honora Hogan b. 1831 with a father called Daniel from Co.Tipperary is the family mentioned above who went to the US.

As my search has shown that there is a descrepancy in records at this time it is difficult to know how accurate any of these records are. In addition both the names Honora (and the varients) and Daniel Hogan are very common.

Am going back to Co. Tipperary in a few weeks, staying in Nenagh and will be hiring a car to go to Loch Derg which is apparently Hogan country.

  • Thank you for your response. You are right there are very many Daniel and Honora Hogans especially around that part of Tipperary.

I just returned from a wonderful trip to Terryglass, Tipperary .There are many many Hogan’s buried in the cemetery there.

The people ofTerryglass were so kind and the food and camaraderie at Paddy’s Bar was Ireland at its best. Helen Fox is the historian there.

Nenagh as you probably know is very close to Terryglass. Have a great trip and find those Hogan’s!

  • Interesting!! I stayed in Nenagh 2 years ago to gallivant around Cappanasmear/Terryglass/Borrisokane.

Agree with Kathy Didden, Terryglass is adorable and Helen Fox is amazingly knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. Paddy’s Bar was so quaint, and food tasty. The smoked salmon on brown bread with avocado is still a memorable highlight, as were their scones with tea. Sadly, I regret that I ordered a Coors Light to drink rather than a Guinness. Pretty sure my Hogans would be a bit disappointed. The Ryan Nissan dealer group in Co Tipperary for car rental was outstanding.

John Grenham, yes, famous historian/genealogist, checked my research on Hogan lines, and helped locate the exact property they owned. I was able to view that property. As far as I’m aware, the only descendant to have done so after leaving Ireland in 1840s. If I recall correctly, Mr. Grenham found 13 Daniel Hogans living in this area during the time of tithe applotments and Griffiths. Complicated. I’d be happy to share excerpts of his report, with credit to him, if it helps you in your own searches. It also might be worthwhile to reach out to him re: research on your own Hogans, as he’s already done some on mine, and may have it handy. In my opinion, he had very reasonable research rates.

  • Thanks Kathy and Tina, my distant US relatives, for your comments and suggestions. I am hiring a Nissan from the Ryan group (drive one at home also on the left hand side of the road) and will definately check out Paddy's bar.

My father has blue eyes and sandy ginger/blonde hair as does my sister (and my late grandmother) which I suspect is a Hogan gene. Mine only goes that colour if I have a permanent wave due the chemicals!

I do most of my research online on the Ancestry website. I note that there are a couple of US family trees on the site which mention a Nora Mahr (Nora being a variation of Honora and Mahr (can also be spelt as Maher) being her married name) b. 1831 d. 15/11/73 Mendon, St Joseph Michigan. The death index document is on the site however states that at time of death she was 39 years old and 2 months which would make the year born 1834 not 1831. Not sure how accurate any of our searches are as many people did not know their exact birth date not having all the legal documents that we do now. I also notice that sometimes the handwriting is not easy to read and spelling can be wrong.

I have been 'over the pond' twice, the first spending a month in Arkansas, flying via Dulles and O'Hare (and 3 nights in New Orleans). The second time touring California, Nevada and Arizona. Could have visited more relatives when I went to Australia but wasn't doing family history at the time. Have just ordered the death certificate for my Honora Hogan (I already have a copy of her marriage certificate). London is less than an hour by train so it is easy to visit to do research.

    Best wishes

  • Hi Annette

Just joined this site and I think we are related!  Honorah Hogan is my 3xGGM too....!   She married Edwin Sleigh in London in 1847.  Her father was Daniel Hogan, he was born in Ireland in 1800, was a printer and died in 1851.  His wife, (my 4 x GGM) was Bridget Gaven and was born in Ireland, although they married in London in Lambeth, on 23rd July 1826.

I have a family tree for the Sleighs that goes back to 1758.  Not sure how/if we are related, my maiden name was Richardson, my great grandmother was also called Honorah Richardson (neé Sleigh)

Hope this helps you.  Let me know if you would like to know more.

  • Hi Deena,

My great aunt Honora Hogan was born in 1842 to Catty Purcell and William Hogan in Terryglass Tipperary . They lived at "The Rock".  Her brother was Daniel Hogan was my 2x g- grandfather born in Terryglas in 1830.  Honora married John Wixted  in Nenagh, Tipperary on Oct. 17, 1865. They had 4 children. William b.1866, Nenagh -Mary b. 1868, Nenagh, Thomas b.1870,Offaly -Bridget b.1872,Shinrone, Offaly.

Sadly I don't see a connection for us. However there is another (of many) Honora Hogans. She also was born in Terryglass in 1843 and her parents were Darby Hogan and Mary Tierney. I think this Darby Hogan was godfather to my great Uncle Patrick Hogan b.1836 !

It's fun to chat with different searchers along the way.

    Best, Kathy Hogan Didden

  • Hi Deena
Thanks for your message however, looking at the evidence that I have seen so far, the Daniel and Bridget that you mention could not be in my view Honora's parents because:
When she married in 1847 the marriage certificate (of which I have a copy) says that her father Daniel who had been a Tailor was deceased. Not the Daniel who died in 1851.
Daniel & Bridgets daughter was shown on both the 1841 and 1851 censuses as not being born in Ireland and in the latter was still a Hogan living with her parents.
My research is based on online records on the Ancestry website and hardcopies of her marriage and death certificates. What are your sources which prove who her parents are? I am thinking a going down the DNA test route as there are so many people with same name and discrepancies in records.
My late paternal grandmother was Dorothy Kent-Ledger (born Sleigh on 15 July 1919 in North London). Her family were a longline of Tailors/Dressmakers and rumours are that they did some work on Royal coronation robes!
Will do some more research and see what more I can find.

  • Hi Nettie

My copy of the Sleigh family tree was done by a friend of my cousin - who is an amateur genealogist.

My family are also from North London - Camden/Somers Town and I know that my paternal great grandmother Honorah lived in Highgate/Kentish Town for many years.

My Edwin and Honorah, married in London in 1847, had a son called Daniel, who was born in Tipperary in 1847, he was a tailor and died in 1895.  His brother, William Sleigh, born in 1851, emigrated to Australia and died there in 1913.

Very interesting and way too many Hogans & Sleighs!

  • Hi Deena

No leads so far relating to more info re Honora and family however, I have had several DNA matches on Ancestry.co.uk of 2nd-4th cousins who like me are descendants. Also have some DNA matches with people who have trees with Hogan on them from Tipperary but being such a common name may not be the same family. Also some matches with people in Tipperary without Hogans on their trees.

I have been given some photos by an Australian descendant of William Sleigh (Honora's son) who wrote to my Father several years, to whom I have been corresponding. In addition I also have some family photos of the Sleighs. I have posted them on Ancestry (Kent-Ledger tree) however if you are not on that site and would like to see them, my email address is aperry210966@hotmail.com. Alternatively, I am on Facebook and use messenger (Annette Low - picture of me with long hair and glasses, standing in front of window).

    Best wishes

  • Hello, I’ve just discovered this thread and I hope that there’s still someone out there…

I have an Anne Tuohy, daughter of Patrick Tuohy and Maria Finn of Cully, married to a Daniel Tuohy.

is this Daniel Tuohy of Cappanasmear, I’m wondering?
