  • So we must be cousins then. Hello. James was my great, great uncle.
I don't have any more information on James. Many of the McEllins who went to America from Balla changed their name to McAllen or McAllan
James was mentioned in his brother Dennis's will  I couldn't copy it here.

..... The children of James McEllin, deceased, who was a brother of said Dennis McEllin, deceased, and residence at time of death is unknown to petitioner; the names, ages and places of residence of each and all said children are unknown to petitioner

I am not subscribed to Ancestry at the moment but if I find out any more I will let you know

Maybe you have some information you can share on the McEllin family

  • OMG - BMAC we all must be cousins!  Edward McEllin born 1845 Islandeady Mayo, immigrated from Canada to settle first in Batavia then came to Chicago.  John McEllin is my great-grandfather, his daughter Dorothy was my grandmother. Dorothy married James Arnold Holmes against family wishes in 1923 then  had 3 kids Mary Jane my mother born 1924, Bettie born 1926 and Dorothy 1927.  Dorothy(Grandma) died from TB 1929.  James Holmes gave baby Dorothy to his sister to raise and put, Mary Jane and Bettie in an orphanage.   Mary McEllin (aunt to kids and daughter of John McEllin) took the 2 girls from the orphanage and all went to live with "Gramps" John McEllin.  Mary married Tom Malloney and the girls stayed and were raised by her and her husband. Mary Jane married Warren Olsen in 1944.

  • Maureen we are definately cousins!!  John McEllin is also my great-grandfather! Edward is my grandfather and brother to your grandmother Dorothy.  I have been to their gravesight many, many times over the past 50 years.  It's only10 minutes from my house. Not sure if you've been there, here is the gravestone.  It shows John McEllin born in 1860, but I believe it was 1863-4

  • I saw photo of headstone.  I’m blown away. Mary Maloney lived with my family when she retired.   She raised my mother. Never saw this headstone.

Betty’s kids are still in Illinois. Fellow cousins. I’m still in touch with them.

  • So you were able to see the picture?  I am Bob McEllin, one of 11 grandkids of Edward.  His sons were Edward, Donald, and John (Jack).  We all grew up in the Chicago area and celebrated all holidays, birthdays, and special occasions together.  Some wild holidays especially when we were all together as kids. Seven of us "kids" still live in the Chicago area. Whats your last name Maureen and who are Betty's kids that are in Illinois and their last name?  Great to connect with you
