Hello!
I very recently leared one of my great-great-great grandfathers (specifically: my Dad's dad's mom's mom's dad), David Roche, wrote on his 1851 US Citizenship application that he was born in "Carriline, County Cork" on/about 21 September 1811, and arrived in Boston, Massachusetts in 1837.
Then, I found a marriage record in the Parish Register for "Carrigaline and Templebrigid, Cork" for David Roche and Catharine Hogan, married 13 February 1836; witnesses were L. W. Conley and Ellen M'Daniel.
David and Catherine Hogan/Hagan Roche are listed as parents in parish and civic records for 4 daughters and a son (so far!) born in Boston from 1841-54:
* Mary Roche (1841 - 1859)
* Catharine Roche (1845 - after 1865)
* Elizabeth Roche (1847 - 1936) - my great-great grandmother
* David H. Roche (1850 - 1893)
* Ellen Roche (1854 - 1854)
It appears mother Catherine Hogan Roche died shortly after daughter Ellen was born and died.
I have seen the surname spelled as ROCHE, ROACH, and ROACHE in various documents.
When my great-great grandmother passed, her obituary specifically showed that the priest who said her Funeral Mass, Rev. George A. Keelan, was her "cousin." Further research determined that the Rev. Keelan's mother was yet another Catharine (Elizabeth) Roche; this Catherine's Death Certificate showed that she also was born in Carrigaline, Cork, on 14 June 1834, to Michael Roche and Mary Obrine. I have yet to find documentation that officially "ties" this Catherine Elizabeth to my ggg-grandfather David ... but, the search continues.
I found a death record for a David Roche in Boston in 1880, but it showed his parents were Patrick and Ellen Roche ...
I'm looking forward to comparing notes with anyone who might be researching this Roche family.
