Denis was the son of John Cahalane & Bridget Crimmeen. I believe that Crimmeen was the nickname for a branch of the McCarthy clan. He was born in Clounkeen or Clounkeen or Clounkeen West, Kilmacabea. Siblings were John, James, Thomas, , Bridget, & Mary. James & Bridget died of Typhus during Famine, & everyone else went to America between 1851 & 1854. Mary married Cornelius O'Connell & lived in Binghamton NY. Bridget lived with sons in Staunton, VA, where they worked on the Blue Ridge Tunnel. Bridget also adopted a daughter back in Ireland, & she came with her to America. Her name was Mary Ann Marmion, born 1842-3, in Skibbereen. In America, their name became Callahan. They had cousins who lived next to them in Ireland, & ended up in Binghamton, NY. They were the children of Cornelius Cahalane & Kate Herlihy. Cornelius was John Sr.'s brother. Also, as a widow, Bridget lived in Shreelane, Kilmacabea, from 1851 until she left for America. She rented a tiny cottage from Michael Dinneen.
