JOHN HUMPHREY, born abt 1808, emigrated from the Ballintra area in Donegal to Canada West.
He and his wife SARAH (SPENCE) settled in Sheffield Twp., Addington County where their eldest known child, MARY JANE, was born about 1838. Their other children were ANNA ELIZABETH, WILLIAM, THOMAS, SARAH REBECCA, ARABELLA and MARGARET.
Family lore and the marriage records of daughters SARAH REBECCA and MARGARET show their mother's name as SARAH SPENCE. A Church Of Ireland, Parish of Donegal record shows an Aug 15, 1814, baptism of a SARAH SPENCE, father THOMAS of Drimmanardagh. The same SARAH? Perhaps explains the second son of the family being named THOMAS, for his maternal grandfather. The names THOMAS and JOHN, to a lesser extent, have been carried down through the generations in the HUMPHREY family.
With the exception of MARY JANE, all of JOHN and SARAH's family and JOHN himself moved further west to Grey County in Canada West in the 1870s. Later some again moved further west in Canada.
