  • About 1911 taken in Melbourne.  We have not been able to find her birth certificate or a single relative.  Sad face.

  • Oh, but she's beautiful! Did you post a message to the Co. Antrim Message Board? It doubles your chances (of finding a connection) if you add this page as URL link in your message post (and add your message board post link here).

    Best of luck!

  • Hi, Christine.  I just found this message board, and it's the first of 4 to even have a familiar name.  I'd loved to be connected in some way to that lovely lady, but if she was born in Belfast, it's unlikely.

I have no family pictures until that of my great grandmother, Mary Ann McErlain.  Mary Ann emigrated to the U.S. in 1887, having married (against her father's will) John McGugan, from nearby Park Armoy.  John and Mary Ann arrived in New York with a 1-year old daughter, Emily, and four days later had a second daughter, Mary.  My grandmother, Margaret, was their third, born in San Francisco.

Mary Ann McErlain was born on 12 December 1856, in Breen, Ballycastle, Antrim to Patrick McErlain (1830-1863 and Mary Ann Close (1831-1892).

Mary Ann McErlain was Patrick and Mary Ann's third child, and first daughter.  The other children, born between 1852 and 1876, include: Patrick, Daniel, Margaret, Catherine, Jane, Rose, James, John and Caroline.  I have a few bits and pieces about each of these other children, but they were born well after your Eliza.

Patrick's parents were William McErlain (1818-1863) and Anna McCloy, and their other children I've found were Jane, James, Henry and William.  About these I have very little information, but, if we are connected, this is a better time frame.

My known ancestors either stayed in Ireland or emigrated to the U.S. though my grandmother and her sisters did speak of two uncles who moved to or were sent to Australia, and there's something about horses in the story.  Apparently, "the girls" heard of their uncles' death and expected a financial windfall, but were disappointed to only get about $50 each.

Good luck with your ancestry work, and please be in touch if anything I've shared looks like a connection.
