Elizabeth was born 1844 in Glenlee, Donegal. She was orphaned and along with her 2 older sisters, Rebecca and Anne, she emigrated to New Zealand and the 3 of them settled in Roxburgh, Central Otago. She married Joseph Haughton, a miner originally from Stockport, Manchester. Her parents were Jane Beattie and John Kennedy.
