Ellen Josephine Stokes was born in the Rathkeale Workhouse. She had three siblings. John, Mary, and Bridget. 

Her brother John gave her 10 pounds to immigrate to America.
She arrived in NY on December 23, 1909 @ age 24 on ship Teutonic. She sailed with her nephew, John O'Grady Jr. His mother was Mary Stokes O'Grady (Ellen's sister), and she arrived in NY in April 1902 via ship Umbria.
