  • Looks like Ellen is the sister of Lawrence Kelly (1799-1876) who was born in Mallardstown, Callan.  He was the leader of a secret agrarian militant group and was transported to Tasmania in 1845.  The reason he was transported was that he wrote threatening letters to the employees of a Landlady named Fitzgerald who evicted his brother in law John Cuddihy and his family from their farm and home in 1844.

In the  book "Callan 800 History & Heritage (1207-2007)" published by Callan Heritage Society in 2007 there is a full chapter on Lawrence and his family written by his ggg grandaughter Eileen Kelly..  An amazing story, well researched and told.

  • It would seem that 1805 is about the correct date of her birth considering she was 65 when she died in 1870 and was 50 when she married in 1856.

The correct title for the book Eileen Kellys wonderful chapter on Lawrence Kelly and his famaily is in is Callan 800 History & Heritage (1207-2007) Companion Volume.  Published by Callan Heritage Society in 2013.  It is as the title denotes a companion volume to the "Big Book" published in 2007.

  • Thank you Joe for your information regarding Callan 800 History & Heritage (1207-2007) Companion Volume. I have not heard of this publication before and would be very interested in purchasing it if it is still available.

I agree with you that 1805 is more likely and indications I have found more support this. I noticed some on Ancestry have cited 1813 but I believe that this year relates to another Ellen Kelly.

I was aware of Ellen's brother Laurence Kelly and his history, and I knew he had sponsored Ellen's migration to Port Cygnet, Tasmania. David Coad has written several books regarding the settlers of Cygnet and many Irish settled in this area, many of whom are my direct ancestors. David writes of Laurence's transportation in a chapter of the book Port Cygnet Irish Convicts.

Do you know if Eileen is open to being contacted?

  •  I wrote to Eileen Kelly and she would be delighted to make contact with you.  How do I transmit her e-mail to you without it being  put into the public domain so to speak?
