Emily Aitkin was born on the 13th of March 1875 to James and Mary Taylor (née Condell), in Beltany, Co. Tyrone. The family show up later in Loughrea, Co. Galway, where Emily married George Aitkin, a Scottish man and fellow member of the Church of Ireland who was working as the Land land Steward of Coorheen House, the home of the Dowager Countess of Clancarty. Emily's father was a witness at the wedding in 1897, and their address is given as Coorheen, Loughrea. Emily and George had five children,
- Maria Margaret 23.05.1898
- Emily Christina 04.01.1900
- James George 21.05.1902
- Esther Sarah 14.10.1904
- Samuel Victor William 22.09.1908
As there are no death certs for Emily or her husband in the Irish records, and they are not listed in the 1911 census, it is possible that they left the area after the Dowager Countess died in 1905. Perhaps they returned to George's birthplace of Roxburghshire, Scotland.
