George Edward Nurse was born in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh on the 14th of April 1873. Both of his parents were born in Guernsey, and that is also where Nurse went to be educated.

As a young man, Nurse enlisted in the British military forces. He was stationed in South Africa during the Second Boer War.

On the 15th of December 1899, Nurse was involved in the Battle of Colenso, during which he assisted a Captain Congreve in limbering up a gun, all the while under heavy enemy fire.

For his actions on that day, Nurse was awarded the prestigious Victoria Cross.

Nurse went on to achieve the rank of lieutenant.

George Edward Nurse died in Liverpool on the 25th of November 1945.
